West Brom v Aston Villa: championship play-off semifinal, return – live! | Football
Now, read Stuart James's match report:
A brief note on Mile Jedinak, courtesy of Matthew Stephens via email. "He never lost a penalty for club or country," he says. "This is 17/17 for him now. Ice in his veins that man." And some reaction from Tyrone Mings. "We always seem to find a way to win at the moment," he says. "It was difficult against 10 men but we have a group of guys who never know when they were beaten."
Dean Smith speaks. "The day we knew we were in the playoffs, we started working on penalties," he says. "So, we did it for four weeks. We had a plan on who would take them. We work hard with Jed Steer on how the opposition would go, so this was the plan." Jack Grealish insists that Aston Villa did only half of the work. "We did last season, (but) there is no need to go on the run that we have been falling and the last obstacle (again). We will have a few days off and then we will prepare for Wembley. "
Jed Steer, who saved two penalties in the shooting, speaks. "I think I had to face about 100 of them a day in the last few days, so it is brilliant to do a couple of parades," he says. "Bring on Wembley!" As for Tammy Abraham, who scored the winning free kick, he shook off any pressure. "For me, I'm used to it. I'm professional. I'm used to it. This means the world."
Aston Villa beat West Brom 4-3 on penalties!
Villa is returning to Wembley! It was not the cleanest penalty in the world, but Abraham just ruffles the net.
Now, Tammy Abraham can win for Villa …
Penalty 1-3: Jack Grealish sends Johnstone the wrong way.
Penalizations 1-2: Scores of Tosin Adarabioyo. Hope for West Brom.
Penalty 0-2: Mile Jedinak, who was brought only for this purpose, sweeps his corner kick in the corner.
Penalty 0-1: Jed Steer saves again! The Villa goalkeeper gets a good right hand on Ahmed Hegazi's penalty kick.
Penalty 0-1: Conor Hourihane sends Sam Johnstone the wrong way! Villa Aston advantage!
Penalty 0-0: Jed Steer saves from Mason Holgate! The Villa's goalkeeper guesses correctly, diving to his left.
Who do we like? West Brom has no penalty in his field – Jay Rodriguez – on the field. Villa has them, Tammy Abraham. Both managers seem a little agitated as the captains toss the coin.
Full time in extra time: West Brom 1-0 Aston Villa (2-2 agg)
Penalties will decide who reaches Wembley!
120 minutes: There will be another two minutes added. Villa has a corner. Grealish will make him swing in …
118 min: The ball breaks gently for Davis, whose effort on goal is deflected wide by Craig Dawson. Kodjia tries to react, but cannot attach to it. In the midst of all this, Tyrone Mings was injured but pulled himself from the ground to fight.
117 min: Big chance! McGinn got the better on the right to beat two West Brom defenders, biting James Morrison before raising a nice crossbar at the far post. There, Keinan Davis and Tammy Abraham are both in a row to give the header a goal, but get in the way. Frustration reigns over Smith.
116 min: Grealish claims handball against Craig Dawson – but referee Chris Kavanagh failed to make his opinion clearer by forming a big cross with his hands.
114 min: Hegazi throws another hopeful ball into the West Brom box. Villa continues to push but he seems to be short of ideas. Can West Brom hold out for a penalty?
113 min: Keinan Davis is running for Elmohamady. An undoubtedly positive move by Smith, who brings an attacker for a fullback.
112 min: McGinn throws a ball towards the backpost, where Adomah is lurking. The wing is taken in two minds and ends up nodding straight to Johnstone, who gratefully squeezes the ball.
111 min: Elmohamady opens on the right and plays a nice ball on the face of West Brom. Villa tries to keep him alive on the back, but West Brom – almost – survives.
