Dramatic drone footage has emerged showing the damage caused to homes after a violent stormripped through one of Greece’s top tourist areas killing seven and injuring at least 23.

Six tourists including two children were killed – two each from the Czech Republic, Russia and Romania – in the northern peninsula of Halkidiki, near Greece’s second city Thessaloniki, in the storm late on Wednesday.

Relatives have since identified the body of a local fisherman in his sixties who had been missing since the storm and was later found in the sea.

Drone footage shows badly damaged properties in the nearby village of Vergia after powerful gales snapped trees and power pylons, tossing vehicles and flinging beach lounge chairs into trees, leaving swathes of debris across the coastline.

As a state of emergency was declared in Halkidiki on Thursday, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis cancelled all his planned meetings so that he could be in constant contact with the relevant ministers.

Later in the day, state inspectors were quickly dispatched to the area to assess the scale of the damage to agricultural cultivations and infrastructure.

The process of examining the extent of damages to cultivations, homes and businesses so that compensation can be calculated and distributed was being overseen by Interior Minister Panagiotis Theodorikakos and Agricultural Development Minister Makis Voridis.

Theodorikakos on Wednesday said that a total of 500,000 euros would be given as an emergency supplement to the municipalities of Nea Propontida, Kassandra and Sithonia so that damage to infrastructure can be repaired immediately.
