I’m Starting a Website to Connect Phone Line Alarms to Internet

29-05-2019 08:05

Last summer, I wanted to monitor my Ademco Vista 20p, but it only had the legacy phone line communicator. Not wanting to buy additional hardware, I began developing a small application to field phone calls from the alarm panel (which just uses DTMF), and alert me on my phone. Over the next year, my small Python script became a full website which can connect any Contact-ID compatible alarm system to IFTTT, Zapier, and Pushbullet.

I’m hoping to release this service, but because it requires that I invest up front in hosting costs (and I’m in college) I wanted to know two things:

  1. Are y’all interested in something like this? I know lots of people with disconnected alarm systems, but I don’t know to what extent that demographic overlaps with the set of people willing to go into their alarm panel settings and program in a custom phone number even with instructions.

  2. What would be a fair price for this service? My main goal is to cover running expenses with a little extra money to justify ongoing development and pay the $200/mo IFTTT partner fee.

I expect the service to start out with Zapier and Pushbullet support. If enough people sign up, I’ll activate the IFTTT integration. In addition, I may open source parts of the program like a Flask-Style IFTTT API for Python or the phone line server.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!
