An average delay of 21 minutes was anticipated for passengers at Stansted this morning

More than 50 flights were delayed – nearly a fifth of all planes.

Some passengers were left furious, blaming poor customer service.

Tanya tweeted: “Absolutely ridiculous that we’ve been sat on our Ryanair plane for 40 minutes at @STN_Airport, to just be told it’s going to be at least another half hour before we can actually leave.

“Not offered drinks or anything, just left locked on the plane stuck and dehydrated”.

Responding to the Stansted Airport tweet that they’d be on their way “swiftly”, she added: “It’s been over an hour already, there’s nothing swift about this.

“@Ryanair have absolutely no customer service at all, this is terrible from all sides”.

An airport spokesman confirmed there were no cancellations.

In a statement, the airport said: “Aircraft were temporarily held from departing or arriving at London Stansted this morning to allow for minor runway surface works to be safely carried out.
“Flights were suspended at 09.10 with the runway re-opening at 10.03. Four arriving aircraft were diverted to other airports during this period but will now return to Stansted.

“We apologies for the inconvenience this essential safety work may have caused to passengers.”
