Cast including Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald on the famous cobbles, were shooting scenes in Bolton which saw his character unwittingly become a getaway driver when a shop is robbed by balaclava-wearing thugs.
Greater Manchester police yesterday confirmed they had attended following reports of an alleged armed robbery at around midday, when a gang of men targeted the nearby “unit base” and stole electrical equipment.
A source on set revealed: “The crew were very shaken up by the incident. Nobody is quite sure exactly what happened because it was all so fast, but it’s a huge worry for everyone.
“They made off with a very expensive electrical generator, but it was obviously a targeted attack because of all the kit on site and it could have been a lot more.
“There has always been security on set and we often film on location around Manchester and the surrounding area, but going forwards we’re talking about increasing that to ensure there are no repeats of this.”
The incident took place near to Bolton’s Rugby Union Club where bosses had set up the equipment for the nearby shooting.
A police spokeswoman said: “Greater Manchester Police were yesterday called to reports of a suspected armed robbery at around 11.30am.”
The storyline sees Steve McDonald, a veteran of the soap for 30 years, unsuspectingly pick up a fare in his character’s taxi before driving to a nearby garage – where his passenger orchestrates a hold-up and orders the cabbie to drive him away at speed.
