Help! I’m Addicted – part 3

Blogging is addictive. So are cell phones, computers and the television. According to research American adults spend 11 hours a day on media. If you are concerned about media dependency pull up a chair and sit down.

I am thankful to a kind blogging friend who helped me understand the psychology behind addictions. When a reward is realized a pleasant dopamine high occurs in our brains. For this pleasant sensation to continue we have to repeat the process. Thus we become caught in a pattern of addiction. A way of stopping this process is to “cut off the cues.”

After reading the above information I picked up where I left off reading the Bible. I found what I was reading applied to addictions and other sinful habits. Sin is addictive! It seemed God was saying, stay in the fray by confessing sin and putting it aside.

When sin is recognized the first thing is to confess it.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Once purified from sin we can figuratively put sin aside and walk in the opposition direction.

Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit
and hypocrisy and envy and all slander,
like newborn babies,
long for the pure milk of the word,
so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

Notice in the fourth line the phrase long for. When we are addicted we long for something other than “the pure milk of the word.” How do we go from longing for sin to longing for the God’s word? This is accomplished by repetitively putting sin aside through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth
through the Spirit

As the deer panteth for the water
so my heart longeth after Thee.
You alone are my heart’s desire
and I long to worship Thee.
