Tate Martell says one thing, surprisingly acts another way in looking at transfer
Last week, Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell seemed “100 percent confident” that he would be the starting quarterback in Columbus next year. He even reiterated his ability to win the job just after the Rose Bowl. Well, that was last week. It was announced Thursday that Martell entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.
Look, Martell has every right to transfer and do what is in his best interest. However, a move like this would be a complete surprise, especially after all the tweeting and talking the redshirt freshman has done regarding the future of the position and Justin Fields.
The 5-11 sophomore-to-be came into Ohio State as a prominent and nationally popular recruit, and still has a good chance of winning the job if he stays. He has two years of experience with the offense, and seems to be well liked by his teammates.
Hopefully Martell decides to stick it out and compete, as he has become a fan favorite in Columbus. That looks like tall odds though at this point and count me as one that is shocked and surprised at this move.
