Summer 2019 Capsule Wardrobe: Kick Off
Hey dreamers! It’s starting to warm up in LA so I decided to transition over to my summer capsule wardrobe. I had tons of lessons learned from my first capsule wardrobe that I wanted to implement into my summer 2019 capsule wardrobe. This time around I took more time to plan an overall theme and select items that would pair well with others. Let’s get into the details!

Summer 2019 Challenge Goals
Add Color, Pattern, and Texture
In my last challenge, I wore black, black, and more black. I do like black basics but it started to feel like a uniform. With this challenge, I wanted to experiment with more color, patterns, and textures.
Wear Less Athletic Gear
To be honest, I’ve been in a style rut for a while. One of my personal goals this year was to lose some inches before my wedding in September. Instead of purchasing clothes throughout my weight loss journey, I wanted to wait until I reached my goal size before investing in a new wardrobe.
During this process, the only items that would fit were my athletic gear. I had gotten so comfortable wearing yoga pants and tennis that I lost a little of my femininity in the process. During my spring challenge, I had the opportunity to dress up again and it made me feel much more confident.
For this challenge, I’ve eliminated most of my workout gear. I plan on wearing athletic wear only when I workout or lounging at home.
Begin Compiling Wardrobe Basics
I began my summer capsule wardrobe challenge by purging my closet. In doing so, I realized that I had compiled one of a kind pieces. In the past, I would buy an outfit for an event and wouldn’t consider whether it paired well with other items in my closet. After completing my first capsule wardrobe, I realized I needed one of the criteria of adding items to my closet to be how well it paired with other items.
Summer 2019 Color Palette
As mentioned above, one of the items missing from my last capsule wardrobe was color. So the first step of creating my summer capsule wardrobe was to choose a color palette. I started my looking through my current closet. When I did this, I realized I like to stick to neutral colors. I used this as a foundation and added some color, patterns, and textures.
Below are the colors I selected for my Summer 2019 Capsule Wardrobe:
- Main Colors: Black, Gray, White
- Neutral Colors: Olive Green, Camel
- Accent Colors: Jester Red, Toffee (2019 Summer Colors)
- Patterns and Textures: Cheetah Print, Denim
Summer Style Inspiration
What was really helpful this time around was creating a summer inspiration board. I used Pinterest to gather inspiration from fellow bloggers and fashion magazines to get a sense of what to add to my wardrobe. Feel free to check out my Summer Style Board over on Pinterest.
Summer 2019 Items
I’ve made a couple of changes for my summer capsule wardrobe, such as…
- Reducing Outerwear. For summer, I’ve scaled back outerwear in my capsule wardrobe. The temperature in LA has been getting warmer and warmer and I only need to carry a jacket for cool mornings or evenings.
- Eliminating Accessories Category. This doesn’t mean I won’t pair accessories with my outfits but I wanted the flexibility to add different types of accessories to add interest to my outfits. I’m going to allow myself free reign of all of my accessories for this capsule wardrobe.
- Leaving Spots Available In Each Category. During my last capsule wardrobe, I selected all of my items upfront. It was helpful in keeping me from overspending on my clothing budget…a HUGE Plus. Though, I did feel pressured to keep items in my capsule wardrobe that I would have donated just because I was fearful of not having enough clothing. Instead of 50 items, I’ve scaled back to 39 items that I absolutely love. I do plan on adding summer basics into the mix throughout the season but want to be selective with my choices. I’ll share my selections as I go.
I thought it would be helpful to share which items transitioned from my Spring 2019 Capsule so I marked them with an asterisk (*).

Summer 2019 Wishlist
I didn’t load up my capsule wardrobe this time to leave some spots open to add some summer staples. I’ve had my eye on some 2019 summer trends. Here’s just a few:
- Midi Skirt
- Linen Dress
- Slide Sandals
- Straw Crossbody Bag
- Summer Jewelry
I felt much more structured and prepared for this capsule wardrobe than my last. What was really helpful was creating an inspiration board filled with colors, textures, and images of what I wanted my Summer 2019 Capsule Wardrobe to look like. It helped me visualize what I would want to wear this summer.
Well that’s all for my Summer 2019 Capsule Wardrobe Kick Off. Thanks for stopping by!
Check back in next week for my Summer 2019 capsule outfits.
