A father who wanted to raise awareness about his missing daughter on the Jeremy Kyle Show says he was ‘totally humiliated’ when his cross-dressing was brought up.

Bob Downes, father of missing teenager Charlene Downes, says he has been spat at in the streets and had pints poured over him in pubs since his appearance on the show.

He feels he was asked to be on the programme under false pretences and is glad it’s been cancelled for good.

The father-of-four said he thought that being on the show would help him find his daughter who went missing in 2003.

He told the Mirror: ‘I wanted publicity for the search and I wanted to raise awareness of the issues of grooming and sexual exploitation of missing kids.

‘But my cross-dressing was brought up and I felt like a freak. It was very uncomfortable.’

He agreed to be on the show after admitting to being a cross-dresser while police found women’s clothing belonging to him as they searched his home for clues.

Bob had considered gender reassignment in the past and had an alter-ego called ‘Martina’.

On the show Bob’s wife Karen said she didn’t love him any more and said she was only staying with him for their daughter.

‘It broke me – to have my deepest personal issues aired live on TV like that,’ Bob added.

He said the abuse hurled at him since the appearance in November left him feeling ‘totally humiliated’ and unable to leave the house.

He said he was glad the show was cancelled but said it could have come much sooner.

The programme has been permanently cancelled following the suspected suicide of guest Steve Dymond, ITV confirmed today.

The 63-year-old was found dead in his bedroom just days after appearing on the show where he reportedly failed a lie detector test that said he’d been unfaithful to his fiancée.
