ITV confirms Love Island will not be cancelled in wake of backlash over The Jeremy Kyle Show axing
ITV has confirmed that Love Island will be back this summer.
It comes after calls to cancel the dating programme mounted when The Jeremy Kyle Show was axed following the death of guest Steve Dymond.
Dymond died in a suspected suicide shortly after filming his episode, which was not aired.
Many have questioned Love Island’s return following the suicides of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis over the last year.
ITV said in a statement to i: ‘Love Island the series will return this summer.
‘In March we outlined in detail the extensive duty of care processes now in place for contributors, past and present.’
After Thalassitis died, Love Island said they would be altering their aftercare for contestants.
In a previous statement they outlined their welfare processes for Jeremy Kyle guests.
The broadcaster said they ‘regularly review our processes’ and reiterated that they were ‘shocked and saddened’ at the news the guest had passed away a week after taping.
ITV explained that ‘all guests are seen by a member of the guest welfare team’ after filming to ‘ensure they are feeling calm and emotionally settled’ before leaving taping to travel home.
‘Ongoing service’ from the show is also discussed with the guest, and if requested then ‘appropriate’ solutions are found such as counselling, anger management or family mediation.
Meanwhile Kyle himself has said he is ‘devastated’ at his show’s cancellation.
‘Myself and the production team I have worked with for the last 14 years are all utterly devastated by the recent events,’ he told The Sun.
‘Our thoughts and sympathies are with Steve’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.’
Dymond appeared on the show earlier this month alongside his on-off partner, and after failing a lie detector test was left feeling dejected and, according to his landlady, ‘humiliated’.
However others have defended the programme including former EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook, who said she was made to feel ‘safe and comfortable’ after her three-month stay in rehab.
