Wimbledon Final; Simona Halep v Serena Williams
By Saturday evening we will either have a first time Wimbledon champion in Simona Halep or an eight time Wimbledon champion in Serena Williams with history on the line.
Both players have gone from strength to strength over the fortnight in London and breezed through their respective semi-finals with ease.
Now, two will become one but who will it be?
Serena leads the head to head at 9-1 against the Romanian.
Their first meeting was in 2011 on the grass at Wimbledon with Serena winning their second round meeting from 3-6 down before going on to win 3-6 6-2 6-1.
The last meeting between them was in Australia and went the distance with Serena winning 6-1 4-6 6-4 against Halep who took some time to get going. The Romanian found some joy when she started being a little bit more clever with her shot selection on that occasion going away from the strike zone of Serena and going back behind her.
The 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore is a tournament both remember very well. It’s crazy to think it is almost five years ago now.
Serena commented that she remembers her 6-0 6-2 loss to Simona in the round robin stage and it’s a reminder of how fantastic the Romanian can play. They went on to meet in the final of the season ending championships with Serena Williams getting revenge with a 6-3 6-0 win.
H2H of 9-1 is one sided but have only met once since the 2016 US Open in Melbourne at the beginning of the year and they have been incredibly close matches.
This is a tough one to call. I have admiration for both players and it is a shame in these finals that someones tournament will end in heartbreak.
Simona Halep will take some stopping. What she has done so well in the previous few rounds is redirect the ball down both wings and has moved soo freely around the court keeping almost every ball in play.
Serena likewise has got better. Her movement, serve and ground strokes have been strong. I’m interested to see how she deals with the deep ball off the Halep racket.
My head says Simona Halep but my heart says Serena Williams…
