Golf has started for 2019, and The Sentry Tournament of Champions (founded 1953) is the calendar-year opening tournament of golf’s PGA Tour season, played in Hawaii on the island of Maui; its field is restricted to golfers who won a tournament on the tour during the previous calendar year.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson is the betting favourite at 5/1.

This season I’ll be following Rory McIlroy; the 29-year-old has qualified for the event on six previous occasions, but has never taken part.

Odds to win: Rory McIlroy 10/1.

Unlike most PGA Tour events the Plantation Course at the Kapalua beach resort is a par 73 course.

Round 1: round of 69 (-4), Rory McIlroy sits three shots off the pace on his debut at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

The first round of the new year is now in the books and birdies were plentiful in the windy, tropical paradise of Maui, where 21 of the 33 players in the field managed to shoot under par.

Round 2: round of 68 (-5), the 29-year-old Northern Irishman holed four birdies on the back nine, bringing him three shots behind leader Gary Woodland following the second round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

T2 Bryson DeChambeau 69 68 9/2

Conditions are supposed to get tougher tomorrow with wind speeds at more than 20 mph.

Round 3: round of 68 (-5), the Northern Irishman briefly tied for the lead in Hawaii but remains three shots behind American Gary Woodland.

McIlroy pounded it off the tee with precision all afternoon and had five drives of 360-plus yards, but managed just one birdie over his final nine holes.

Woodland bogeyed the 12th to give hope to McIlroy but came back by holing a 64-yard putt for an eagle on the 15th.

Pos Players R3 Total Odds
1 Gary Woodland 68 -17 8/11
2 Rory McIlroy 68 -14 5/2
3 Marc Leishman 68 -13 8/1

Rory McIlroy remains in contention heading into the final round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Round 4: round of 72 (-1), Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy started in second place, three shots behind Woodland, but fell away with a 72.

The 29-year-old’s round left him 15 under overall, tied for fourth place alongside last year’s champion Dustin Johnson and Marc Leishman.

Sentry Tournament of Champions - Preview Day 3

McIlroy said, “I obviously could have shot a better score, but I did what I wanted to do, gave myself plenty of chances, just couldn’t get the ball to drop.”
