On a couple of other journeys to Perth I have stayed at Cottesloe which is a beachside suburb. I went there by train this morning. It’s a 15 minute train ride and a 15 minute walk. It was a beautiful sunny morning. The trains here are very good. I have been on the train 4 times now and the ticket inspectors have been in 2 of them. I remember from previous trips to Perth that the inspectors are on most trains because apart from Perth and Fremantle the stations are unmanned. They have SmartRider here, the same as Melbourne’s Myki and Sydney’s Opal Card. Being from interstate I can’t get a Senior SmartRider but I can get the senior discount for the paper tickets. For a senior a daily ticket is $5.40 which is about $1 dearer than Melbourne and more than double Sydney’s senior fare. In Sydney a senior can travel anywhere in the state and the maximum fare for the day is $2.50. I assumed it was $2.50 for metropolitan Sydney but a couple of women who were on the Indian Pacific were from country NSW and they said they regularly make return trips to Sydney for $2.50.
It was 6 degrees this morning which the locals found to be very cold. It didn’t stop some intrepid surfers at Cottesloe but they did have wetsuits on.
This in the Ocean Beach Hotel where I have stayed previously.
