A Grain of Sand

We live in a day of identity politics leading to increasing polarisation and ever greater incivility, especially on social media. Whether it is Brexit, ‘misgendering’ or  supposed ‘hate crimes’ people are ready to lash out. How should the church react to the increasing marginalisation of Christianity? Typically the mainstream church adopts the standpoint of the world […]

At the beginning of my academic career, British philosopher Peter Strawson visited Zagreb and gave a talk at our department. In a chat after his lecture, I asked him for his opinion about Jack Smart, the Australian philosopher, in whose work on physicalism I was then very interested. Strawson’s comment on Smart was just the […]

On tour with the kid

The Prologue – I have never watched a show staring a Kardashian. I realise this seems like an odd thing to brag about but I offer it by way of an explanation. Although the kid and I are thrilled to be sharing our travel stories, we have no desire to have our own reality show. […]

Visit a popular store, like an Apple, Nike, Levi, H&M or an Ikea store. The brand should be well-known and you must visit a shop where their products are being displayed or distributed. In smaller towns you may not have access to these stores, in this case you will need to find a section showcasing […]

Although coal and steam launched the industrial revolution, gasoline and controlled explosions have sustained it for over a century.  After early precursors, the internal combustion engine that we recognize today came to life in 1876 from the German engineers Otto and Daimler with later variations by Benz and Diesel.  In the early 20th century, the […]

Readers of the Krypt know of my love for the drive-in theaters and also my continued hope to get more people to go out and support the few that are still around. With the recent news that one of our local drive-ins, The Cascade in West Chicago, IL, will not be opening back up this […]

North Coast railroad history expert and Timber Heritage Association board member Sean Mitchell will present “Fire in the Mountain: The Beginning of the End of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad,” the first program of the Humboldt County Historical Society’s new Southern Humboldt series, on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Redway Elementary School Multipurpose Room, 344 Humboldt Ave. in Redway. Admission is free and everyone is invited. Mitchell will tell the story of the 1978 Island Mountain Tunnel Fire. Twenty-five miles east of Garberville, and deep in the Eel River Canyon, the fire was a turning point for our Northwestern Pacific Railroad. The 4,314-foot tunnel caught fire in September of 1978, causing more than 1,500 feet of this vital link to collapse. The NWPRR was the economic lifeline to Humboldt County, yet it could not fully recover after the Island Mountain Tunnel fire. Mitchell will explain how the tunnel fire was truly the beginning of the end for the NWP, and he will also show photographs from a recent trip to the Eel River Canyon, 16 years after the last train passed through. For more information, contact the Humboldt County Historical Society at 707-445-4342 or visit http://www.humboldthistory.org.

The term is associated with scepticism, irony and philosophical critiques of the concepts […]
