JUDY Murray admits she swore the first time Andy beat her at tennis – now I know how she feels. The future Wimbledon champ had the better of his mum from the age of 11, but I still thought those days were long off when I made a New Year resolution to start running with my 15-year-old son Andrew. Matt was beaten to the finish line by his son Andrew I signed us both up to the Simplyhealth Great Stirling Castle Run, which is only a 7k, as I didn’t want to frighten him off by diving straight in for a 10k. The first mammoth task wasn’t the hill up towards Stirling Castle’s gates, but getting a teenage boy out his bed at half seven in the morning after he’s been playing Xbox until 2am. After that it was a drive through to the town’s beautiful King’s Park to take our place at the starting line. Cards on the table, we are both runners although I’m a lot more serious about it – or so I thought. Andrew runs about four times a week but he’s so lackadaisical and never seems to put much oomph into his stride. He soon realised they’d had a lot of fun while keeping fit Even though he had been cursing the defeat I’d promised not to run too far ahead and made a pact that we’d cross the finishing line together, where I’d then give him a condescending pat on the back for a race well run and bit of father/son bonding. Boy was I in for a shock. As soon as it started he was off like a shot. I was left panting as I tried to keep pace but try as I might I couldn’t catch up with his gangly frame. Andrew raced ahead from the off Instead I could only catch glimpses of his thick, long hair weaving and bobbing through the crowd ahead. My only hope was he’d quickly tire out and fortunately for me he did on the first hill as the route snaked up around the base of the 12th Century fortress. Natural order was resumed as I was able to take the lead and even had to wait for him near the top for him to catch up. Man reveals how he shed 100lbs in a year to become fitness guru and mental health champion But my sportsmanship was thrown straight back in my face when Andrew took off like a whippet out the traps again for the downward slope. He clearly had no intentions of sticking to our pre-race gentlemen’s agreement of crossing the line together. Perhaps as punishment for the early morning start I could see he was determined to beat me as we hit the home straight. I gave everything I had left in the tank while Andrew still looked like he still had a few gears to shift through if the notion took him. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN NEWS” posts_category=”76″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] In the end he crossed the finishing line one second faster than my time of 41 minutes and 55 seconds. That’s when I had my Judy Murray moment and swore under my breath. But after the heat of the moment I realised we had actually had a lot of fun together, not to mention the fact it was keeping us fit. Simplyhealth will hold more events later this year in Scotland including The Great Stirling Family Run on April 27 and The Great Stirling run on April 28. That’ll be followed by The Great Aberdeen Run and Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Family Run followed on August 25. It’s a great motivator to sign up as a family, although just prepare for your ego to take a battering when your young one’s leave you eating dust. *Simplyhealth is encouraging more families to get active in 2019 with the launch of the Simplyhealth Active Plan.
