1. Always ahead of the curve- The key to being a perennially good franchise is not just knowing one thing that other teams don’t know. Eventually, other teams are going to figure out what you’re doing and copycat or even improve upon it….Look at sports these past 5 years. Analytics have taken over. But now […]

The Denver Post
Coach: Mike Tomlin (12th year — 123-62-1 regular season, 8-7 playoffs). Record: 7-2-1 (first in AFC North). The Steelers have won six consecutive games. Last week: Won 20-16 at Jacksonville. Next week: vs. L.A. Chargers. PLAYERS TO WATCH 1. WR Antonio Brown Statistics: Brown is 14th in catches (62), 13th in receiving yards (807) and tied for first in touchdown receptions (11). … On track for his sixth consecutive season of 1,000 yards, but matching streak of 100 catches is in jeopardy (on pace for 96). … Has faced the Broncos only three times but has 25 catches for 333 yards, including 16 catches-189 yards-two touchdowns in December 2015. Analysis: Brown had five catches for 117 yards and one touchdown in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville. He caught passes after lining up wide left, wide right, stack right, slot left and slot right. … Brown’s two big plays: A 78-yard touchdown on a post route when free safety Tashaun Gipson inexplicably bit on a crossing receiver. And on the winning drive, Brown caught a 25-yard pass on an over route when a tight end “rubbed” cornerback Jalen Ramsey. 2. QB Ben Roethlisberger Statistics: The 36-year old Roethlisberger leads the NFL with 418 passing attempts, is fourth in yards (3,203), tied for fifth in touchdowns (23), tied for fourth in interceptions (10) and 15th in rating (96.9). … A two-time Super Bowl champion, he has a regular season/playoff record of 155-73-1. … Against the Broncos, he is 3-5, including a 1-4 record in Denver. Analysis: An all-time gunslinger, Roethlisberger isn’t a scrambler as much as he buys time by sliding around the pocket and throwing on the run. … He had three interceptions in the first three quarters against Jacksonville, but was 15 of 22 for 170 yards, one touchdown pass and one touchdown run in the fourth quarter, when the Steelers rallied from 10 down to win. 3. LB T.J. Watt Statistics: A second-year pro, Watt leads the Steelers with 10 sacks, part of a pass rush that leads the NFL with 37 sacks. He has 49 tackles and four forced fumbles. Analysis: J.J. Watt is a left defensive end for the Texans, but younger brother T.J. is a left outside linebacker for the Steelers. … Watt had two sacks Sunday against Jacksonville. He went wide on right tackle Jermey Parnell, bulldozed a chip block by tight end James O’Shaughnessy and got the sack in 2.50 seconds. And on the final play of the game, he stunted inside to get by right guard Chris Reed in 2.61 seconds. 4. RB James Conner Statistics: Le’Veon Bell’s season-long contract dispute has allowed Conner to star. He is fourth in the NFL in carries (173) and yards (796) and third with 10 rushing touchdowns. Analysis: Conner has been all or very little in the Steelers rushing game this year. He has five 100-yard games in which he carried at least 19 times, but three games of fewer than 30 yards. … Conner carried nine times for 25 yards against the Jaguars. … He is also effective as a receiver (45 catches), making it a tough assignment for Broncos linebackers Todd Davis and Josey Jewell. [related_articles location=”right” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] 5. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster Statistics: In his second pro season, Smith-Schuster has developed into a perfect complement to Brown. Smith-Schuster has 64 catches for 866 yards (both 12th in the league) and three touchdowns. Analysis: Smith-Schuster had eight catches for 104 yards against the Jaguars. Only two of those catches were on passes that traveled at least 17 yards in the air. … Against off coverage, Smith-Schuster will catch Roethlisberger’s quick pass and try and gain 7-9 yards.
