Seeing Manchester City’s women’s team has been high on my agenda this season. Originally, I had plans to see them during their home Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid in September. But after walking around Yorkshire all night after Wrexham’s draw with Harrogate, the added trip to Manchester the following day was less enticing.

He’s no one season wonder. The eyes of the footballing world have been psychoanalysing Mo Salah’s every move this season. Pundits and keyboard warriors alike have been pontificating over the Egyptian with more scrutiny than ever, waiting with sharpened claws to pounce on every mistake he makes. SIGN UP – WIN £5k BY PLAYING DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER THIS WEEKEND He endured a difficult start to the campaign Thankfully for Salah’s sake he’s now proving his early season doubters wrong and doing so in some style. Liverpool’s talisman is well on his way to rediscovering his spellbinding form of last season with his hat-trick against Bournemouth the clearest indication of his revival. Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football before Everton’s clash with Watford, Jamie Carragher revealed how a new role for Salah might have been the catalyst in getting Salah back to his best. The former Liverpool defender discussed the upturn in fortunes of last season’s Player of the Year Jurgen Klopp has sporadically deployed Salah in central striker role in recent weeks as opposed to his more familiar right-wing berth. Referencing Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Bournemouth last season, the same scoreline as the weekend’s clash, Carragher pointed out the notable benefits of the Egyptian playing through the middle and giving him fewer defensive responsibilities. The forward only had one touch in his own half at the weekend as opposed to nine in the same fixture last season “He never plays there when it’s 4-3-3, he only plays there when it’s 4-2-3-1,” Carragher said. “What’s very telling is that he rarely plays that role in the so called “big games.” “I think Klopp wants to go with a three in midfield in those games against Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal, but the rest of the time he’s in a central role, it’s interesting. Salah’s starting positions this season indicates Klopp plays him centrally in the games Liverpool are expected to win Carragher suggested that Klopp should reconsider his tactic of starting Salah on the right-wing in the big games, citing Sunday’s meeting against Man United as an occasion where he might thrive in a central role. “I think of last season when United coped with Salah really well, I remember Ashley Young who was playing left-back as a right-footer. Young dealt with the threat of Salah at Old Trafford back in March “He naturally tucked in and that’s exactly the space Salah likes. “So it might be interesting if this is the first real big game we see where Salah plays through the middle. The most straightforward way Liverpool can advance to the knockout round of the Champions League for a second straight year Tuesday is with a 1-0 victory over Napoli at Anfield. The question is whether their improved defence can live up to that 90-minute challenge or whether their offence will have to deliver like last term […]
