HAMILTON chief Ronnie MacDonald has branded managers and players who criticise refs as FAILURES. And the Accies owner insists officials are BETTER at their jobs than the whingeing gaffers and footballers are. MacDonald has had his say on the controversy over referees Old Firm official John Beaton required police protection after receiving threatening messages and was the target of a statement by Celtic in the wake of their Ibrox loss. Willie Collum was also the subject of a Rangers statement about his performance at St Mirren earlier in the campaign. But MacDonald, whose manager Martin Canning has NEVER faced an SFA rap for criticising officials in his four years at the club, says bosses use refs to deflect heat from themselves. He said: “Blaming referees is an excuse for managers and players who don’t do their jobs properly. His gaffer Canning has never faced an SFA rap for criticising officials “If something doesn’t go for them, they blame someone other than themselves. “What’s going on with referees at the moment is disgraceful. “They have got 22 pretentious guys running about thinking they are important — but they’re not, really. “They have no right to be questioning authority, because it just makes it worse for everyone. “The standard of behaviour and example set at the top level is absolutely disgusting and completely irresponsible. “When we lose, it’s either because the other team was better or because we’ve got faults we couldn’t cope with. John Beaton’s Old Firm performance was criticised by Celtic in statement “Blaming the referee for losing is the easy way out. “I think it’s embarrassing that people get called in front of the SFA. Again, it’s down to people being unable to accept their failures. “Managers and players who criticise refs are failures who can’t look at themselves and say, ‘He’s probably better at his job than I am at mine’. KRIS BOYD Celtic’s John Beaton criticism was embarrassing.. Rangers also have previous this season with Willie Collum “There are solutions. I’d be in favour of what happens in rugby — anyone who shouts at a referee or gathers around him should be sent off. It would soon stop. “A few years ago there was a rule that if there was dissent the ball got moved back ten yards. That was worth persevering with. “The other alternative is a withdrawal of labour. John Beaton’s the latest guy who’s being victimised, so maybe referees should say, ‘If we’re doing such a bad job, we won’t bother coming’. “Then what would the SFA do? Bring in foreign refs, the way they did before? How long will they pay for that?” Rangers were fined for slamming Collum in a statement MacDonald says his manager demonstrates what he terms a “will to manage”. He added: “Martin’s never been done for criticising a referee. Why would he be? “We get as many refereeing decisions against us as anyone — maybe more, because we don’t have thousands of fans screaming for a penalty. “But we try and have a bit of dignity and treat everybody with a degree of respect. “Say, ‘the referee wasn’t very good today but he did his best. My centre half flogged two goals — he had a bad day but he did his best’. Move on. “I call it the will to manage. If I was a boss and my players misbehaved the way some do I’d crush them. “When I started out with Knightswood Amateurs they were in Division Six of the Scottish Amateur League. [article-rail-section title=”Most Read” posts_category=”3″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] “It was the lowest grade possible and we got referees who controlled games without moving outside the centre circle. “But that didn’t matter — because if he wasn’t there, either one secretary or the other had to referee the game and it was mayhem. TAM COWAN Chris Sutton is talking nonsense about Rangers vs Celtic ref John Beaton.. just like ‘stitch-up’ claims “The most important thing any Saturday was that the ref was there, because otherwise your Saturday was ruined. “But if things keep going the way they are it’ll discourage younger guys starting out and before we know it we won’t have enough refs to take charge. And then what happens?” Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers from Scottish football plus fixtures, results and live match commentary  [bc_video video_id=”5988535670001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa admits to sending a spy to Derby County training ground”]
