Frank Lampard takes charge of his first Chelsea game against Bohemians (Picture: Getty) Frank Lampard appears to have handed Danny Drinkwater a career lifeline at Chelsea by starting the midfielder in his first game in charge against League of Ireland side Bohemians. The 29-year-old was ostracised from the Chelsea first-team squad under Lampard’s predecessor Maurizio Sarri, failing to make a single appearance in the Premier League or Europa League under the Italian. Drinkwater’s only appearance for the Blues last season came during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield 11 months ago in Sarri’s first game in charge. The England international cost the Blues £40m when he signed from Leicester City in 2017 but he has made only 23 appearances for the club across two seasons. Danny Drinkwater starts for Chelsea against Bohemians (Picture: Getty) However, he has been given an opportunity to show what he can do in Lampard’s first game in what is an experimental line-up from the former Derby County manager. As well as Drinkwater, Kenedy and Michy Batshuayi both start for Chelsea following their respective loan spells with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace last term. Michy Batshuayi also starts against Bohemians (Picture: Getty) Tiemoue Bakayoko, who spent last season with AC Milan, starts on the bench amid interest from Manchester United, as does Everton transfer target Kurt Zouma. A number of Chelsea’s first-team players are yet to report for pre-season due to various international commitments but Lampard has taken the opportunity to watch his fringe players in Ireland. Chelsea’s team vs Bohemians: Caballero, Sterling, Azpilicueta, Guehi, Kenedy, Drinkwater, Ampadu, Pedro, Gallagher, Palmer, Batshuayi Subs: Cumming, Zappacosta, Chalobah, Zouma, Maatsen, Baker, Bakayoko, Brown, Gilmour, Piazon, Ugbo [metro-tag-post-strip]
