IT looks like it is going to a shootout. Chelsea legends John Terry and Frank Lampard, in rival camps for the Championship play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby, are both after the same job. Frank Lampard has been tipped to replace Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea But Dennis Wise thinks John Terry would be a better choice These decorated players, friends and former team-mates, have made no secret of their ambitions to make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge as manager one day. And Dennis Wise — who captained the Blues between 1993 and 2001 — is backing his former boot boy. Wise said: “If I had to have a bet, if I was really pressed, then I would say John will get the Chelsea job before Frank. “They will both want it, I’m sure of that and it is a race against the clock — a race against each other — in many ways. “John is doing it differently to Frank because he has gone in as an assistant at Villa to Dean Smith — and that’s a shrewd move. “It means he can listen to some conversations in the manager’s office that he has never heard before. “Players can look up to, respect and admire, people like Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti out on the training field, or the way they conduct themselves around the club. “But what the players don’t see is the planning, preparation, the tactical analysis and conversations that go on inside the manager’s office. “John is getting the experience of that under Dean without having to take charge of those situations.” LAMPARD VS TERRY IN PLAY-OFF FINAL With a massive showdown at Wembley on Monday to prepare for, at least one of Terry or Lampard will be back in the Premier League. Terry, 38, has been working under Smith at Villa since he took the job in October last year. The former Chelsea and England skipper has a thirst for knowledge, taking notes on training sessions under the Special One and banking them for use down the line. Rams boss Lampard, 40, is calling on all his experience too, taking training sessions with his No 2 Jody Morris — another Chelsea old boy — as they plot victory at Wembley. Wise added: “Frank has done very well with Derby, getting them into the play-offs and then having that brilliant 4-2 win at Leeds in the second leg. This is how the Blues could line-up next season with their ex-midfielder in charge “I’m sure Frank has probably used the experience of his dad or Harry Redknapp when he wants another voice on something — but it is still a big learning curve. “Walking into a dressing room — with players looking for guidance from the manager — is not an easy thing to do in the first year but Frank has done it.” There are sub-plots all over the park, with this final being dominated by Chelsea blue. Morris, who played with Wise when he came through the youth ranks at Chelsea, is also close friends with JT. And Ashley Cole, who played alongside Terry and Lampard at Chelsea for eight years, has been at Derby since January. CHELSEA WEMBLEY SUB-PLOTS Wise added: “You’ve really got to be single-minded and focused in situations like this and just blank everything else out. “This is in danger of turning into a Chelsea final — but you have to respect Aston Villa and Derby because this is really about them. “People are forgetting Dean is the manager of Villa. “He put this run together and he took them into the play-offs. He gets the credit for that. “The Chelsea factor cannot become a distraction. It is a firm handshake when John and Frank see each other and then on with the game.” There are some extra layers as well, with Chelsea loanees Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori lining up for Derby. Villa have borrowed some Blues firepower as well, with Tammy Abraham scoring 26 times for them in the league. Wise added: “Frank has done well, he has shown trust in young players to do a big job for him in the Championship. “It is an impressive quality because Frank did not play his football at that level. “For him, it was almost always at the top of the Premier League, Champions League or with England. “To recognise ability, to integrate it with very experienced Championship players and some older heads at Derby, is a good characteristic.” PRESSURE MORE ON LAMPARD THAN TERRY Lampard exceeded expectations in his first season, scraping into the play-offs before going on to win a dramatic semi-final against Leeds. The Rams lost twice to Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the league — but put the Spygate saga to one side to come up trumps when it really counted. The pressure is now on Lampard to win one more game, to continue this hot streak by leading the Rams back to the Premier League. Wise added: “There is more riding on this for Frank because he is the main voice at Derby. “John is in the background still, watching and learning. “But I will be intrigued to see what happens if Derby don’t go up — because it will require a different set of skills to lift the players. [article-rail-topic title=”Latest Chelsea news” term_id=”979″ posts_number=”6″ /]   “There could be changes to the budget, loan players return to their clubs and it could be a completely different set-up next season. “Frank will know the risks but the way he has started his management career will give him confidence he can now win at Wembley.” Do that, and he might just pip JT to the job they both dream of. Maurizio Sarri could leave Chelsea after just a year in charge John Terry and Frank Lampard will be on opposing sides in Monday’s play-off final
