The legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United is clearly evident six years after his retirement as manager of the club. Since Ferguson called it a day in 2013, after 1,500 games in charge, the Red Devils have had four different permanent bosses. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Sir Alex Ferguson They have also spent more than £800million on transfers with a net spend of £552million. Despite the enormous amount spent on players, in the starting line-up against Barcelona, a game they lost 3-0, there were just four players signed in the post-Ferguson era. The rest were either signings made by the legendary manager or have come through the youth ranks. It perhaps illustrates the need for an extensive overhaul in the summer under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, something the boss has said is likely to happen. FRANCIS COQUELIN has been suspended for the first leg Europa League clash against former club Arsenal. The French midfielder, 27, will not feature at the Emirates on May 2 after he picked up a yellow card during Valencia’s 2-0 win over Villarreal in the quarter-final. Francis Coquelin left Arsenal to join Valencia after three loan spells Coquelin made 160 appearances in all competitions for the North London club between 2008 and 2018. During his time with the Premier League giants, he was shipped out on loan to Lorient, Freiburg and Charlton. And after struggling to cement his spot in the first-team, he joined Valencia in January 2018 for £12million. He has been a huge hit for the La Liga side, but they will be without him for the first-leg clash next month. Alexandre Lacazette had admitted that he was looking forward to playing against his fellow Frenchman. Speaking about the reunion, the Arsenal striker said: “Yes, we will play against Francis Coquelin too, who will be against us, so I can’t wait to play against him.” ‘AMAZING IRONY’ And a number of fans on Twitter were furious after Coquelin was booked in the semi-final after a controversial handball decision. One said: “Unfortunately, Francis Coquelin will miss the first leg in the EL semi-finals at the Emirates, which is a shame. Would love for him to make a London reunion.” Another added: “Amazing irony that Coquelin will miss the trip to Emirates through suspension.” Coquelin has remained as a fan favourite and the midfielder has spoken openly about his appreciation for the club. Raheem Sterling met them after scoring his England hat-trick and Chris Smalling has just become a patron. Meet Football Beyond Borders: a fast-growing charity making a massive difference. talkSPORT met Chris Smalling at FBB’s North West launch It began in 2009 in London but after launching a scheme in the North West it is now reaching 600 children. The story is familiar – a kid who loves football but struggles in the classroom. That is where FBB comes in with a football-based education programme. Speaking to talkSPORT at a special event in Manchester, the England defender said: “I came from a disadvantaged background and when people class you as ‘disadvantaged’ your dreams are so far away you can’t really realise them.” Football Beyond Borders are doing some tremendous work with young people Twenty miles away youngsters at Accrington Academy are in that position and many have never travelled outside their home town. Every week Football Beyond Borders runs a two-hour session for them: one hour in the classroom and one in the sports hall. Lucy is in Year 8 and she said it’s changing her school life: “I kept getting angry in class and FBB have taught me how to calm myself down. It’s a lot easier to learn now,” she admitted. A group of children participate in a coaching session FBB mix up the rules to teach valuable life-skills. Allowing only one child per team to speak develops their leadership qualities and trains others in different communication methods. Oliver, 13, said: “You come from not being anything to being something good and it makes you feel proud about yourself and everyone else.” Meeting Premier League stars is another way the children get inspired. Actions speak louder than words. Powerful message from @sterling7 to our young people: “just do what you believe in. If someone tells you you’re not good enough, that’s their opinion.” 🙌❤️ pic.twitter.com/GywVmPLcbU — FBB (@FBeyondBorders) March 23, 2019 Following his England hat-trick against Czech Republic, Raheem Sterling took the time to meet FBB participants at Wembley. Yaya Toure, Yannick Bolasie, Santi Cazorla and Gary Neville have all been interviewed by children through Football Beyond Borders. The charity’s effect is startling to say the least. FBB claims kids taking part are involved in 31% fewer incidents of bad behaviour and achieve a 48% improvement in teacher-assessed attitude to learning. Clifford Harrop has moved from London to join Football Beyond Borders’ North West programme A high ability to play football isn’t required to join in and games include boys and girls from different year groups. FBB worker Clifford Harrop said: “The main thing is to create relationships and let them know someone cares about them, and then begin to fill them with self-worth.” The charity was born after a trip to the Middle-East where football was being used to bring people together. The Manchester United defender is a patron for Football Beyond Borders The first schools were introduced in the Brixton area of London, but Co-Founder Jasper Kain says he wants to reach every disadvantaged area in the country. “There are thousands of young people who have a love for the game but are under-achieving in our education system,” Kain said. Smalling added: “School can be tough, but merging it with football is the perfect way to get children to learn.”

MAURIZIO SARRI says Olivier Giroud will stay at Chelsea next season – putting the Blues boss and the French ace on a collision course. The striker recently claimed he had offers to leave and was considering his future after failing to nail down a place in the starting XI. Olivier Giroud is staying at Chelsea next season But Chelsea have an option to trigger a year-long extension clause in his contract. And Sarri is adamant the Blues will exercise their right to keep the Frenchman at Stamford Bridge. Sarri said: “He is sure (to stay) because the club has an option for another year, another season. “I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. “So, he will remain.” Giroud has scored 12 goals in all competitions this term, with ten of those coming in the Europa League. However, he has yet to fully win over Sarri, with Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain both preferred in the Premier League. But opportunities could appear next term with Chelsea yet to overturn their transfer ban. While Higuain is unlikely to stay on even if the Blues are able to sign him. But Giroud could kick up a fuss if he still finds himself on the bench, saying before yesterday’s win over Slavia Prague: “When the boss gives me a chance to bring something else to the team, I try to give my best and I am fully committed. “I have been efficient. It has worked up until now so hopefully I will get some more goals to get us to the final. “Trust me, I am very frustrated when I am not on the pitch but I don’t want to show it. “I am not happy to play second choice so that’s why I have said next year I will need to have a more important role.
