GONZALO HIGUAIN has finally completed his move to Chelsea – and bravely opted to take on the “cursed” No9 shirt. The former Napoli star, 31, has reunited with Maurizio Sarri at the Blues after his loan at AC Milan from Juventus failed to pan out. Gonzalo Higuain has bravely opted to wear the No9 jersey at Chelsea But Chelsea fans have every reason to be concerned. After all, Higuain was supposed to be the man to come in and finally provide their first solid centre- forward option since Diego Costa. Instead, the Argentine has risked it all for the infamous shirt… we take a look back at the last nine Chelsea No9 and how it all turned sour for them. MATEJA KEZMAN Mateja Kezman was arguably the start of the Chelsea No9 curse When: 2004-05 Games: 41 Goals: 7 THE Serbian star arrived in England with a huge reputation after racking up the goals in Holland with PSV Eindhoven. However, in England, Kezman scored just seven goals in 41 games and was promptly axed by then-boss Jose Mourinho. HERNAN CRESPO Hernan Crespo was hit by the curse off the pitch rather than on it When: 2003-05 Games: 73 Goals: 25 ARGUABLY the “most successful” flop on the list, Crespo didn’t fare too poorly in West London. However, while the curse of the shirt avoided his form on then pitch, it wrecked his career off it as he failed to settle down in the Premier League. Crespo was then sent packing, spending stints at both AC and Inter Milan before leaving permanently. KHALID BOULAHROUZ Khalid Boulahrouz is arguably the weirdest No9 in football history When: 2006-08 Games: 20 Goals: 0 WHAT on Earth was this all about? A second-choice right-back taking on the No9 jersey. Is nothing sacred? Boulahrouz played just 20 times for Chelsea, failing to score a single goal. Hardly a shocker… [bc_video video_id=”5993033770001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Gonzalo Higuain signs for Chelsea on-loan until the end of the season from Juventus “] [article-rail-topic title=”MORE CHELSEA STORIES” term_id=”979″ posts_number=”12″ /] STEVE SIDWELL Steve Sidwell was a a No9 at Chelsea once upon a time When: 2007-08 Games: 25 Goals: 1 SERIOUSLY, what’s with the bonkers shirt number choices? This time it was the turn of ex-Wigan centre-mid Sidwell to take over the No9 jersey – scoring once in 25 games. Prolific. FRANCO DI SANTO Franco Di Santo failed to score a single goal in 16 games for Chelsea When: 2008-09 Games: 16 Goals: 0 YIKES. This is getting ugly now. The ex-Wigan star – now at Schalke – played 16 times for Chelsea, failing to net in a single game. And he was an actual striker… FERNANDO TORRES Not even Fernando Torres could save Chelsea from the curse of the No9 shirt When: 2011-2016 Games: 172 Goals: 45 FINALLY. Chelsea bosses saw sense and opted to end the curse by splashing £50million on arguably the best striker on the planet… with Prem experience to boot. Nope, nobody is safe from the curse of the No9 jersey – as Torres looked a shell of his Liverpool self, scoring just 20 Premier League goals in 110 games. That’s a truly abysmal record for a man who’d worn the No9 jersey almost his entire career at Atletico Madrid and the Reds. RADAMEL FALCAO Radamel Falcao mustered just one goal in his disastrous stint When: 2015-16 Games: 12 Goals: 1 CHALK Torres up to a loss, surely Falcao could restore the glory days of Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink. Well no, we all know what happened here. A single goal in 12 games – in the 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace – the Colombian ended up getting injured and being replaced by Alexandre Pato, who steered clear of No9. Wise boy. ALVARO MORATA Alvaro Morata is the most recent star to succumb to the No9 shirt curse When: 2017-present Games: 48 (as No9) Goals: 15 (as No9) THINGS got so bad for Morata wearing the No9 shirt, he gave it up after a single season. After a flying start to life at Chelsea, Morata ended up scoring just 15 goals in 48 games wearing the No9 top. Mind you, he’s hardly fared better with the No29 – with five Premier League goals in 16 games this season. GONZALO HIGUAIN Only time will tell whether Gonzalo Higuain can break the curse of the No9 shirt When: 2019-present Games: N/A Goals: N/A WITH 107 La Liga goals in 190 games and 71 Serie A goals in just 104 games at Napoli – Chelsea FINALLY have their star No9. Or have they? After all, at AC Milan this season, Higuain managed just eight goals in 22 games – a far cry from his 36 strikes in 35 games – an Italian record – in 2015-16. The Argentine’s dip in form this season hasn’t put them off the star – but perhaps they could have given him a less high-profile jersey… [bc_video video_id=”5992870443001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri hails Gonzalo Higuain one of the best strikers he has worked with “]
