The skin that covers your lips is unique. It doesn’t have sweat or oil glands and it’s the thinnest skin on your body. That makes it especially vulnerable to day-to-day aggressors, like sun, wind, heat, salty foods and dryness. Add aging into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for extra dry and uncomfortable lips. […]

Stop Cold Sores

There are no cures for cold sores.   Myth You cannot prevent cold sores only treat them when you get one.   Lie If there were a way to prevent cold sores a drug company would patent it and make a fortune selling it as a prescription.   Half-truth In this post I want to […]

It’s something every woman fears: Waking up on the day before or day of a big holiday party with an unsightly skincare emergency. How many women have cancelled an invitation because a cold sore erupted? How about cystic acne on your chin that appears New Year’s Eve? While neither of these are “life threatening” conditions, […]

Catherine Carlson uses her hands to describe the shifting states of her grief. “Sometimes it’s kind of out there, like a cloud or a bubble,” she says, fluttering her hands above her head as she sits across the dining room table from her husband, Steven Carlson, in their Arden Hills home. “Other times, it’s here. … Right in front of my face,” she says, moving her hand just beyond her nose. When it’s right there, staring her down, Catherine Carlson has a trick to keep it from spilling into tears. The nurse frequently started scrambling to solve complex multiplication problems when she found herself on the cusp of crying at work in the weeks and months after her 16-year-old daughter, Stephanie Carlson, was killed in a car accident. Carlson died along with one of her best friends, 16-year-old Bridget Giere, as they were on their way to Mounds View High School. Bridget Giere, left, and Stephanie Carlson, both 16, were killed in a car crash Dec. 1 2016 when Rachel Kayl smashed into the car they were in at the intersection of County Road 96 and Old Highway 10 in Arden Hills. (Courtesy of Marilee Giere) The driver of the vehicle, Samantha Redden — the third leg of their tight friend-trio — was seriously injured but survived. “I learned it from a woman I know,” Catherine Carlson says of the strategy, explaining that it helps shift her focus to the left, logical side of her brain when the right hemisphere is flooded with grief. “I was surprised how much it helped,” the mother of five continues. “When I went back to work, I never knew what would trigger me or when. … Suddenly, I’d be sitting in a meeting going, ‘OK, try and multiple 246 by 73.’ “You know, you expect your parents to pass away, and spouses know that one spouse will probably go before the other, but no one really expects their daughter or teenager to give them a hug before school and never come home,” Catherine Carlson said. Steven Carlson last saw his daughter the night before she died. “She was in her room. Yeah. The next time I saw her (was) in a casket,” he said. ‘IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED’ Dec. 1 will mark two years since the girls were killed. It happened early that morning, shortly after Redden had picked them up from their houses. She took a left turn from County Road 96 onto Old Highway 10 when a car going 30 miles over the speed limit hit them. Rachel Kayl, 33, the driver, recently pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide for unintentionally causing the girls’ deaths. She pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular operation to account for Redden’s injuries. She’s expected to be sentenced in the coming weeks. The traffic is loud on County Road 96 at the memorial garden built at North Heights Lutheran Church to honor the girls. It’s less than a mile from the accident site. From left: Marilee and Martin Giere, and Steven and Catherine Carlson, the parents of Bridget Giere, 16, and Stephanie Carlson, 16, posed in the memorial garden on the grounds of North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills on Sept. 30, 2018. Giere and Carlson were killed in a car crash in December 2016, hit by driver Rachel Kayl, who was speeding. (Scott Takushi / Pioneer Press) Tall evergreens separate the boulders and angel statues from the highway, along with two tall cedar crosses someone anonymously donated. Each is inscribed with one of the girl’s names, along with a quote. The one for Bridget Giere reads: “Your shining spirit touched my life.” Her dad, Marty Giere, helped Eagle Scout Eddie Brody design it. He chose the greenish and white boulders to match the Mounds View Mustangs’ colors. His daughter’s gravestone has crystals in it and came from Norway, he says, as he and his wife, Marilee, talk about Bridget inside their Arden Hills home this past fall. The gravestone has an image of a bridge spanning water on it, fitting for Bridget, whom Marty and Marilee often called “Bridge,” or “Bridgee.” “It should never have happened. I’ve seen the (traffic camera) video of the accident and I just shake my head,” Marty Giere said, clearing his throat before continuing. “You can’t bring her back, but it’s hard to move on.” Marilee Giere remembers telling her daughter she loved her that morning. Catherine Carlson made Stephanie grilled cheese for breakfast — her special request — before she ran out the door. Hundreds of cards flooded into the couples’ homes after the accident. Marilee Giere tucked the recipe for Bridget’s favorite bran muffins into her thank-you notes. She often made them for her daughter in the morning. “She would take them to school and then she would say that she made them,” Marilee said with a smile. PRESERVING MEMORIES Pictures and other memorabilia from the girls’ lives are all over their homes. Marilee and Marty Giere add photos to their growing shrine in their dining room whenever they come across a new one. One of several signs in the memorial garden. (Scott Takushi / Pioneer Press) A ceramic plate Stephanie painted with clouds and sky sits in the Carlsons’ living room. Catherine Carlson admits she doesn’t even really like it. “Now she’s stuck with it,” her husband jokes. “She can’t throw it away.” Steven Carlson keeps leaving the table to grab photos of special memories he has with his daughter. He shows one of the two of them looking adoringly at each other on the dance floor at his older daughter’s wedding. Another is of Stephanie and her brother, Paul, at his graduation. His wife encourages him to tell the funny story of the time Stephanie made him drop her off a block away from the hair salon so no one would know her dad was her ride. Or how he griped about the $20 price tag that came with the Abreva cold sore medicine she was always asking him to pick up. They found three unopened tubes of it when they cleaned her room after she died. Running errands with and for his daughter was a common way for them to connect, Steven Carlson said. He’s cried at least once a day since she died. “I know she loved me,” he said. A memorial garden for Stephanie and Bridget on the grounds of North Heights Lutheran Church is less than a mile from the site of the accident. (Scott Takushi / Pioneer Press) BABIES OF THEIR FAMILIES Many people know the girls as the Mounds View teens who died in that awful car accident. But hearing their parents remember them brings each out in ways lost in the tragedy. Both were the babies of their families. Bridget worked at the Patio Grill at the Minnesota State Fair and at Target. She was playful, strong-willed, fussy and empathetic. She liked older music and movies, like the Beatles, Elvis and “Singing in the Rain.” She painted her room blue and green, her favorite colors. She was a Girl Scout. She loved tennis and baby-sitting and organizing closets. She was the person friends turned to when they needed advice. She liked volunteering at Feed My Starving Children on her birthday. She was good at English. Her favorite meal was breakfast. Her favorite food was chicken nuggets. Stephanie was the youngest of five, and six years behind the family’s second youngest. Steven Carlson wears a button with an image of Bridget and Stephanie. (Scott Takushi / Pioneer Press) She worked as an aide at a nursing home. She loved astronomy and reading and the TV shows “The X-Files” and “Pretty Little Liars.” She liked to make up silly songs and shadow her mom around the house, sitting on the arm of her chair as she read or following her around the kitchen. The “Harry Potter” fan named her cat Severus. She was the proud owner of a One Direction T-shirt. She ran track and played basketball when she attended St. Agnes School, earning the team’s “Most likely to make you feel better” award. She was happy and talkative and wise and affectionate. At 16, she’d still crawl in between her parents in their bed for a bit before heading off to her own room to sleep. After she died, her parents bought plots for themselves on either side of Stephanie’s. “Just in recognition of how many times she would squeeze in between the two of us,” her mom said. FRIEND WHO SURVIVED ‘HAS STRUGGLES,’ BUT IS ‘DOING GREAT’  Bridget Giere and Samantha Redden, who goes by Sammy, met in second grade. Stephanie Carlson met them a few years later, when they all attended Chippewa Middle School. The three of them were always linked, Catherine Carlson said, adding that if they weren’t physically together, they were texting or Snapchatting. When Redden got her license, they started driving to school together. Redden did not respond to several attempts to reach her for this article. “She’s doing great,” Catherine Carlson said of how Redden has coped with what happened. “Does she have her struggles? Yes, she does, but her pain is pretty well controlled and she is moving around pretty well and looking good.” The teen sustained a collapsed lung in the accident, along with a broken pelvis and injuries to her spleen and brain. Now she’s taking classes at Century College. A PLEA TO DRIVERS: SLOW DOWN The girls’ parents say they want people to remember the teens, and ask about them. It helps keep their memories alive. Marilee Giere hung a wind chime outside for Bridget, and a garden ornament for Stephanie. When they move in the breeze, she says she thinks of the girls dancing. “I miss her a lot,” Marilee says of her daughter. “She would be in college right now.” They also want drivers to remember to slow down. The black box in Kayl’s car clocked her at 81 mph on the 50 mph roadway that day, Steven Carlson said.[related_articles location=”right” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] “People speed and tailgate and drive crazy all the time. … How many of them come this close to an accident,” he said. “You can ruin a lot of lives and affect a lot of lives like that. … I just ask people to think about what could happen.” Miles away at his house, Marty Giere spoke of the same wish. “Life is so precious, and in an instant, it can all change,” he said.
