Yard sale to benefit medical expenses for Root family A yard sale June 29-30 will benefit the Root family with medical expenses after an upcoming kidney transplant for their two sons. Christopher Root, 10, and Austin Root, 9, will be added to the active transplant list in the coming weeks. The boys’ older brother, Marcus, 12, received a kidney transplant in June 2016 at Denver Children’s Hospital. All three boys have a rare genetic disease, cystinosis. The average life of a child with cystinosis who has never had a transplant is 14 years. According to cystinosis.org: “Cystinosis is a rare disease that is typically diagnosed prior to age 2. Cystinosis is a genetic metabolic disease that causes an amino acid, cystine, to accumulate in various organs of the body. Cystine crystals accumulate in the kidneys, eyes, liver, muscles, pancreas, brain and white blood cells.” The yard sale will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 29-30 at 3046 N. Sherrelwood Drive in Cañon City. For more information, call the family at Nicole Root at 719-429-4037 or Gary Root at 719-431-1674. Judy Weyenberg grand champion artist for 2018 Harvest Fest Art Competition Judy Weyenberg, of Cañon City, is the winning artist of the 2018 Harvest Art competition, held annually by The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. Weyenberg’s watercolor, “Pathway to Harvest,” depicts a walkway through the vineyards to the Monastery in bright vibrant colors. She is a second-generation artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who has called Cañon City home for many years. The artwork will be used for posters, cards and tee shirts for the 2018 Harvest Fest. The first runner-up is a pastel watercolor called Abbey Grape Harvest by Bernice Barnes of Pueblo. It is a beautiful depiction of vineyards and the Monastery. There were also entries from as far away as Centennial and Spring Creek, Nevada. All the artwork will be on public display for a showing at the Artist’s Reception, Art in the Park, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Most of the artists will be in attendance. “All the entries are outstanding, and I cannot wait for the community to view them Saturday,” said Sally Davidson, the art competition coordinator. Abbey wine, fruits, cheeses, artisan breads and crackers will be served to complete the afternoon’s enjoyment. The event is free and open to the public. The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey is located at 3011 E. U.S. 50 in Cañon City. For more information, call 719-276-5191 or 877-422-9463 (877-HCA-Winery) or email sally@abbeywinery.com.
