President Donald Trump addressed a room of nearly 2,000 Realtors last Friday, wrapping up the week-long National Association of Realtors’ Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo at the nation’s capital. The President highlighted the value of Realtors in the housing industry while addressing administration priorities and deregulation efforts that could potentially benefit the real estate market. “I’m honored to be here with the hardworking men and women who help millions of families live the American Dream,” said Trump. “Homeownership and what you do as Realtors is a part of Americana. You work hard, you love people, you love this country.” Trump said deregulation and economic growth have helped support the industry and improved business prospects for real estate professionals. “Americans buy homes for the ones you love the most,” he said. “This is a time of extraordinary opportunity for our country. There’s truly never been a better time, in my opinion, to build and break ground in America.” The President also used his speech to announce the U.S. would be lifting steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico, then highlighted Realtors’ connection and contributions to the overall U.S. economy. Trump said, “I’m here today because Realtors play a special role in the economy. When a young family needs room to grow; when a new job sparks a new adventure in a brand new beautiful city; when parents want to find the right neighborhood and schools for their children, Americans puts our trust in you, our great Realtors.” Introducing the President to the crowd gathered at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, NAR President John Smaby said, “I’m so proud of the thousands of Realtors who traveled to our nation’s capital this week to share our story with legislators and policymakers about the many ways Realtors help build vibrant communities accessible to all. I can think of no better way to wrap up our time in Washington than by sharing the Realtor story with our nation’s Chief Executive.” Every year, the national Realtor association, which is the largest trade group representing 1.3 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries, invites the sitting president to its legislative meetings. Trump’s attendance does not constitute a political endorsement, as NAR does not endorse presidential candidates. During the week, 9,000 Realtors from around the country met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and spoke with various administration officials. In total, 486 NAR Federal Policy Coordinators met with Members of Congress, including all House and Senate Leadership on both the Republican and Democratic sides. Leadership from the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors met with U.S. Representatives Anna Eshoo, who represents California’s 18th Congressional; Jackie Speier, the 14th Congressional District; and Ro Khanna, the 17th Congressional District. Representing the local trade association at the meetings were President Alan Barbic, president-elect Mary Kay Groth, NAR directors Leannah Hunt and Jim Hamilton, executive officer Paul Cardus and government affairs director Ryan Carrigan. The legislators were supportive of the Realtor issues, which included Realtor concerns about the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’s treatment of residential real estate. Silicon Valley’s Realtors urged Congress to eliminate the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, noting the SALT cap is punitive to high-cost states and is a double taxation of middle-class Californians. They suggested Congress should also index for inflation the $750,000 mortgage interest deduction and the exclusion on the gains of a primary residence. Expressing her own frustration with the cap on state and local tax deductions, Eshoo said it is “stepping on people’s dreams” of homeownership and taking them away. Remaining hopeful for change, including finding a solution to California’s housing crisis, Eshoo encouraged the Realtors to continue their advocacy. “We have to stop thinking that things can’t be done,” said Eshoo.
