The Eleanor Report

After visiting Toulouse, I decided to head south and spend a few days in the Luberon Region. I figured this would be a good base for exploring some nearby areas, like Provence and the Lavender region. I bought a one-way train ticket from Toulouse to Avignon and stayed for about 5 days. Main Things to […]

Lacking Thought

I was unengaged after the first book, but I actively dislike this one. So many “why?”s. (Spoilers) Why does this detour of the Triwizard Tournament (yes, I’m going to call it that) feel utterly inconsequential to the over-arching story and setting? It felt like a waste of my time, and it barely involved the main […]

Godservations (Gods Observations)

I am a pilot in my own mind and emotions. I didn’t feel like I am the sense of ”I am” more and more of the time this last week, but just a pilot of this collection of emotions, PTSD, and many other things that seem to make up this mental compilation of me. It feels scary […]

In the encyclopedia of Britanica, one of the reasons they gave for UFO sightings, were that governments were secretly testing new weapons and making people believe they were extraterrestrial objects to defer their attention away from the truth. Over 10 years ago, I wrote my explanation of the same thing – how the government built […]

Letter from a Birmingham Jail is an extended argument about the relationship between law and justice, the difference between those two terms and the duties to resist and change unjust laws. It is a call to action: he takes to tasks his fellow pastors and white moderates who are wringing their hands instead of joining […]

ENTICED by special offers in the supermarket? It might be time to look the other way, as more than one third of promotions in supermarkets are bad for your health. Over half of special offers in convenience shops are made up of unhealthy products Shocking new research commissioned by Safefood has found that products high in fat, sugar and salt make up 35pc of special offers. And the figure rises to a worrying 56pc in convenience stores. The study looked at almost 70,000 food products on special offer, with price reductions and multi-buys making up the majority of promotions. However, it seems supermarkets are getting us to buy against our will, as they’re not pushing the type of products we want to buy. More people want to see offers on fruit, meat and veg Shoppers who were surveyed said they wanted to see fewer promotions on things like confectionary (69pc), biscuits (70pc) and sugary drinks (66pc) and more frequent promotion of fruit and vegetables (92pc), fresh meats (80pc) and fish (70pc). Chief specialist in nutrition at Safefood Dr Marian O’Reilly said: “These results highlight that people really don’t want to be tempted by unhealthy food offers, they’d much rather see healthy foods, and particularly fruit and vegetables, on special offer.” She added: “We know that everybody loves a bargain and shoppers involved in the research told us that they made use of promotional offers to help manage the household budget. “They also said they enjoyed the buzz of a bargain. “But with more than a third of foods on offer being unhealthy it’s not surprising that last year Kantar data showed that the average household with children spend more on ‘treat’ foods (19pc spend) than on fruit (10pc) and vegetables (7pc).” The organisation is now encouraging customers to fight back by adopting smarter shopping choices. Its Transform Your Trolley campaign includes practical tips and strategies to avoid being lured by unhealthy deals. And it aims to encourage consumers to buy healthy foods, with a good mix of fruit and veg, starchy products and protein. Here, Aoife Finneran looks at some of the tricks we can use to make your grocery haul a little healthier. For more see www.safefood.eu/transformyourtrolley 1: Plan your meals and snacks Before you go to the supermarket, check what’s in your cupboards, fridge and freezer and only shop for what you need. 2: Make a shopping list Write down all your essential purchases and avoid impulse buys that aren’t on the list. 3: Be aware of special offers Making a shopping list is the easiest way to avoid impulse buying Steer your trolley clear of temptation and don’t go to aisles where you know you’ll find it. Be conscious that one third of foods on promotion aren’t that good for you. 4: Shop alone If you can manage it, do your shopping on your own, without distraction. Pester power is a huge issue and can push parents into making unhealthy choices, so try to avoid bringing kids on the family shop. 5: Don’t shop when you’re hungry Eat a small snack like fruit or some popcorn before you hit the shops. This will help you to make better, healthier choices and you’ll be less inclined to pick treats. Don’t shop with family or when stressed 6: Don’t shop when you’re stressed or tired. When we’re not at our best, we tend to reach for comfort foods to help us get through the day. Plan your shopping trip so you can do it on a day and time when you’re not under pressure. 7: Know your food labels. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN FABULOUS ” posts_category=”44″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] Take the time to compare some of your favourite foods. Sometimes, small changes can make a big difference as you can choose foods that are lower in fat, added sugar and salt. 8: Do a check before the check-out. Cast an eye over your trolley when you’re finished and remove any items that weren’t on your list. Unplanned foods are everywhere, so you don’t need them in your trolley.

So yeah, I didn’t see many movies last year, nor do I plan on seeing many movies this year. I probably would have seen more if I were an art house or auteur cinema guy, but I’m not. I tend to stay on the safe, mainstream side when I go to the movies, which doesn’t […]
