OROVILLE — The California Water Board released a Caution Advisory for harmful algae blooms Monday in Lake Oroville. The blooms of algae were discovered in the Middle Fork of the lake, according to an advisory released on the board’s Twitter Monday. We have a new CAUTION Advisory for harmful algal blooms at Lake Oroville, this time in the Middle Fork. Swimming is still allowed, but those with small children and pets are advised to be extra careful and practice safe water habits. pic.twitter.com/txqoACmTCb — CA Water Boards (@CaWaterBoards) June 17, 2019 In another message on Twitter, the board said that water samples collected were found negative for microcystin. However, lab samples are currently pending for potential toxin testing. Signs have been posted near the Middle Fork of Lake Oroville to advise those near or in the lake to take caution. Swimming is still permitted. On June 4, a caution advisory for harmful algal blooms was also issued for the Thermalito Afterbay. Signs have been posted in locations where the public can access the Afterbay, according to the Water Boards. A CAUTION advisory for harmful algal blooms (HABs) has been issued at the Oroville Dam's Thermalito Afterbay. Signs are posted in locations where the public can access the Afterbay. Water samples collected by the state confirmed that an overabundance of the organisms were found in the water, which can often lead to harmful algae blooms. An overgrowth of cyanobacteria can lead to safety concerns due to possible exposure. Algal blooms can be seen floating on the surface of contaminated water in a variety of colors such as green, white, red or brown.
