MODESTO — Despite moving up a weight class, senior Adriana Lopez of Upper Lake High School wrestling team won the 132-pound division on Saturday during the Lady Eagles Tournament at Gregori High School in Modesto. Lopez bumped up a class so that the Cougars wouldn’t have two wrestlers in the same division. Dena Loans Arrow competed at 126 pounds and finished 3-1 to secure a third-place medal. At 132 pounds, Lopez won all three of her matches in impressive fashion. After a 19-3 victory by tech fall, she pinned her semifinals opponent in the second round. In the finals, she won by 18-2 technical fall. Also for the Cougars, Jessica Lee competed at 170 pounds where she went 1-2 and placed fourth. Upper Lake’s girls are scheduled to compete in the Redwood Empire Classic on Saturday in Ukiah. Kelseyville At Vallejo, Kelseyville’s Jasmin Clarke and Cassidy Griffin competed in the Lady Jaguar Classic at Jesse Bethel High School. Clarke came away with a second-place medal at 189 pounds after dropping a 9-4 decision to last year’s state runner-up, Folashade Akinola of Menlo Atherton High School. (Courtesy photo) Clarke received a first-round bye before pinning Carolina Cortez of Arroyo High School in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Clarke pinned Hollie Espinoza of Rancho Cotate High School, a rematch of last year’s North Coast Section finals won 4-2 by Clarke. This year’s meeting held little suspense as Clarke was in control from the start. The Clarke-Akinola final was a battle most of the way. Akinola led just 4-3 entering the third period. Clarke earned an escape point to tie the match but Akinola scored a takedown and nearfall in the final 30 seconds to win it. “Jasmin made a couple mistakes during the match that cost her,” Kelseyville head coach Adam Garcia said. “We’re looking forward to the next opportunity to see Folashade.” Griffin went 2-2 at 106 pounds. After a 7-1 win over Alaina Moreno of Bear Creek High School in Stockton, she lost by second-round pin to eventual weight class champion Micla Elvira-Chacon of Gilroy High School. In the consolation bracket, Griffin pinned Leah Aguirre of Elsie Allen High School of Santa Rosa before being eliminated by Alison Lopez-Hernandez of Napa’s Vintage High School by first-round pin. Kelseyville’s girls return to action Saturday at the Redwood Empire Classic in Ukiah. Middletown At Vallejo, Chloe Murphy of Middletown High School picked up a fifth-place medal at the Lady Jaguar Classic while competing in the 189-pound division. Middletown’s girls are back in action Saturday at the Redwood Empire Classic in Ukiah.

IN the eyes of some Killie fans he became a hate figure the day he signed a pre-contract deal with Rangers. But Steven Gerrard insists Jordan Jones is still the enemy within as Rangers prepare to head to Rugby Park. Gerrard warns Ibrox-bound Jones he’s still the enemy Jones was pilloried by Kilmarnock supporters after taking to social media to celebrate clinching a four-year deal with Gers earlier this month. The Northern Ireland international will move to Ibrox in the summer, but he’ll line-up against Gerrard’s men as top-flight football returns after the winter shutdown. Gers boss Gerrard said: “It won’t be strange for us. “We know all about Jordan, he’s a good player and always a threat for Kilmarnock. He’s still a Kilmarnock player and we have to respect that. “Kilmarnock have handled it very well, but he’s an opponent and we treat him individually with respect and Kilmarnock with respect. We just deal with it as normal, really. “How difficult will it be for him? That’s a question Jordan will have to answer himself. “Jordan is the one who put it into the public domain, so he has to handle it in the best way he can. “For me, this is Rangers versus Kilmarnock. It’s not about us playing against a future Rangers player. Jones may be Ibrox-bound in the summer but Gerrard knows he’ll be a threat “At the moment where it stands, he’s an opponent, he’s the enemy, he’s a rival and we’ll treat him that way.” Rangers beat Killie in the Betfred Cup at the start of the season. But a Greg Stewart equaliser ensured a share of the spoils when the sides met at Ibrox in the league back in October. Steve Clarke’s men are just a point behind Gers in third with just four separating the top four sides. Gerrard worked alongside Clarke during their time together at Anfield and the Liverpool legend is not surprised he’s got Kilmarnock firmly in the title mix. Gerrard said: “I’ve said it on a few occasions that he’s done an incredible job with his resources. I don’t know what they are in detail, but he’s certainly got Kilmarnock punching above their weight. “He had the most points of a manager in the calendar year, so I’ve nothing but respect for him, but I had that long before he went to Kilmarnock. “I’ve seen him close up and I used to love his sessions. I used to love working with him as he’s a good man. Morelos larks around with Tavernier and Candeias at training “It’s no surprise he’s done a helluva job and, without being disrespectful to Kilmarnock, people will be watching Steve Clarke very, very closely. “Every manager at the top level has attention to detail. I’ve never worked with one who hasn’t. “From the age of 19 until 36, every coach I worked under had attention to detail. “He’s been a player, so he understands situations from a player’s point of view. “That certainly helps in a lot of situations. You can use that experience as a player when you’re a manager. Gerrard hailed Clarke while also discussing Jones’ situation “On top of being a good coach, he has that empathy with players and treats them with respect and I think that goes a long way. “The thing for me with Clarkey is he’s real. He doesn’t try to pretend and be something he’s not. He’s open and he’s honest. “As a player, he’d say to me, ‘I didn’t think you were at it today.’ Sometimes he’d say, ‘I thought you were very good today.’ “That honesty and respect for me went a long way because players are quite clever. They are streetwise, they work you out pretty quickly. The last thing you want to do is be false and then lose players in your dressing room. “Clarkey is real, open and honest and has the courage to tell you when you are not at it. But he’ll reward you if you put it in for him. “That’s how he was under Kenny Dalglish and I respect him for that.” BUFF TIMES Chris Sutton defends calling Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos ‘Buffalo Brains’  Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis are both in line to make their competitive debuts at Rugby Park. Gerrard added: “I’m happy and satisfied. I think we have done really well in this window, getting the calibre of player that we have for nothing, for free. “We knew pretty quickly what we needed in this window. “To be fair to the board and Mark Allen, they delivered very quickly. We got them in as early as we could. “We managed to get them over to Tenerife which was important to get them to settle and get used to the players. “It was a lot easier with Davo, who knows a lot of people around the place. “For Jermain, it was helpful getting business done pretty early. “We have improved the quality in the squad. To do that without having to spend money has been very helpful.” [article-rail-curated title=”related stories” selected_posts=”3782388,3782434,3781783,3782601,3781105,3780407″ /] Gers face Killie tonight before another outing on a plastic pitch against Livi on Sunday. Gerrard said: “We have a difficult start to the second part of the season. Two away games on plastic is not ideal. But we will take them individually. “Kilmarnock we will try to deal with first. “We are going there to try to win the game. It’s an opportunity again to send another statement that we have intent and we want to be in the race. “Before we talk about titles and stuff like that, we have to still continue to earn the right to compete and be in the title race before we talk about winning it.
