BRITS baked in scorching 25C weather today as the whole of the UK enjoyed the warmest Easter Monday EVER, but it won’t last long. Temperatures are also set to fall to as low as 11C with thunderstorms expected. On Monday, England smashed its previous record of 24C in 2011 as the mercury rose to 25C – 9C hotter than Majorca. The heatwave has also helped Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each enjoy their warmest Easter Monday on record, the Met Office said. Scotland climbed to 23.6C today – while in Wales it was 23.5C and Northern Ireland saw temperatures reach 21.4C. The previous record for England was 24C (75.2F) in Hampshire in 2011. Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: “Britain’s warm air has come all the way from Turkey and the Middle East.” Tourism chiefs toasted a £3.5billion jackpot as Easter’s biggest-ever staycation weekend saw up to 14 million Brits holidaying in the UK. The heatwave saw up to 7m more last-minute trippers join the 7.4m who had already planned trips, with up to £3.5billion set to be spent, VisitEngland data showed. SIZZLING SUN Temperatures reached 23.4C at both Cardiff’s Bute Park, in Wales, and at Scotland’s Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, while 21C was recorded at Helen’s Bay in Northern Ireland. These beat the temperatures of 21.6C in Brynamman, Wales, in 1984, along with 20.7C in Aboyne, Scotland, in 2015, and 19.4C in Armagh in Northern Ireland dating back to 1924, which were the previous Easter Sunday records. The highest temperature of this bright, sunny and dry Easter Sunday in England was the 24.6C which was reached at Heathrow. This was still shy of the top Easter Sunday temperature from 2011 when the mercury reached 25.3C in the Solent. RECORD-BREAKER? The UK’s warmest Easter temperature was the 29.4C recorded at Camden Square in London on Easter Saturday in 1949. The other warmest Easter weekend days include the 26.9C recorded at London’s St James’s Park on Good Friday in 2011 – when the mercury also reached 25.3C on Easter Sunday and 24C on Easter Monday, both in the Solent. Met Office meteorologist Dan Hall said that in “stark contrast” to the dry and sunny conditions in the UK, Spain and the Mediterranean are seeing showers and heavy downpours. He added: “Spain is very unsettled as we go into Easter Monday. There are temperatures of 17C to 16C in Barcelona. There are certainly cooler conditions there compared to the UK.” [boxout headline=”Be in control of your bills – and save an average of £219″ intro=”SWITCHCRAFT is a free service that finds you the right energy deal – and you could save an average of £219 a year.”] Sign up, compare and switch with Switchcraft You’ll automatically be switched at the end of your new plan when a cheaper deal comes up Get £5 free cashback when you sign up A fiver will be paid into your bank account within four months of completing the switch. prepayment meter customer customers will receive a £5 Amazon voucher. [/boxout] WILDFIRES Firefighters battled a large wildfire on the famous Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire over the weekend after the blaze broke out on Saturday – which was the hottest day of the year so far. A helicopter was brought in to help fight the fire. More than 70 firefighters battled the flames, just south of the town of Ilkley, and police were deployed to keep people away from the area. West Yorkshire Fire Service said on Sunday morning that 12 crews were on the moor using water jets and beaters. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ NEWS” posts_category=”2″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] A spokesman said: “Specialist wildfire units are also in attendance and a helicopter will be assisting with overhead water attack.” Sergeant Terri Green, from West Yorkshire Police, said on Twitter: “Please stay away from Ilkley Moor today. Deploying many officers to cordon it off due to dangerous conditions due to the fire. Going to need plenty of water and sun cream today for my team and I.” The dry, sunny and very warm temperatures have brought high risk of wildfires in Yorkshire and north-west England, and a moderate likelihood for Wales and south-west England, according to the Met Office. Temperatures will sizzle in the south of England today, as the red patches in this graphic show Temps were forecast to hit 26C yesterday Brits soak up the rays in Aberystwyth, Wales A man tries out paddle boarding in Dorset Swimmers take a dip in the sea as holidaymakers flock to the beach at the seaside resort of Lyme Regis in Dorset A beachgoer makes the most of the sunshine in Bournemouth, Dorset An irate swan capsized a boat after leaping onto the back in Wiltshire [bc_video video_id=”6028601421001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”UK weather forecast for Monday April 22, 2019 – Chilly start of the morning turning into a warm, dry and sunny day “] We pay for your stories!
