Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Everyone’s been talking about Zelda The reveal of a sequel to Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was the most talked about topic during E3 2019, followed by Keanu and Final Fantasy VII. [metro-zone-post-thumbnail-link] E3 2019 was always going to be an unusual year, with Sony, Activision, and EA all refusing to attend in the normal fashion, but while that seemed to leave the door open for Microsoft to make the biggest splash that’s not actually what happened. According to data from Twitter, provided to The Hollywood Reporter, the most popular conversation piece was Nintendo’s livestream event on Tuesday, 11 June, which saw the first detailed looks at games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Luigi’s Mansion 3 and ended with the announcement of a Zelda: Breath Of The Wild sequel. The second most popular event was Keanu Reeve’s surprise appearance during the Cyberpunk 2077 portion of Microsoft’s pre-E3 press conference on Sunday, 9 June. This appeared to overshadow the Project Scarlett and Project xCloud announcements, which weren’t listed by Twitter as major topics. In third place was Final Fantasy VII Remake and in fourth Marvel’s Avengers, both of which were Square Enix titles and clearly justify the decision by the publisher to run their own press conference on the Monday. The most tweeted about game was not Zelda or Cyberpunk, which had to settle for third and second place respectively, but instead Final Fantasy VII Remake. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the fourth most tweeted about game, followed by Marvel’s Avengers. The games that drove the most conversation (much of which would presumably have occurred regardless of E3) were Pokémon, Fortnite, Splatoon 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Apex Legends. [metro-zone-post-strip] According to Twitter, Nintendo earned the most tweets of any publisher this year, followed by Xbox, Sony (despite not even being at E3), Square Enix, and Bethesda. The importance of publishers running their own pre-E3 events was underlined by the fact that every company that did so hit number one in Twitter’s trending topics, even EA with their string of loosely connected livestreams. Whether any of this will have any effect on companies’ plans for next year is unclear, but certainly publisher-specific press conferences look like they will continue to be a thing and it’s more than likely you’ll see even more of them in 2020. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) drew more than 66,000 people to the Los Angeles Convention Center last week. But the real battle for attention happens on social media, where the goal is to steal the minds of millions of gamers around the world. Twitter measured the activity on its social network and found that people tweeted the most about Nintendo (@NintendoAmerica), Xbox Studios (@Xbox), Sony Interactive Entertainment, (@Playstation), Square Enix (@SquareEnix), and Bethesda (@Bethesda). The funny part, of course, is that Sony chose not to exhibit at E3 this year. In past years, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which puts on the show, said that more than a billion impressions are up for grabs at E3. Fortnite booth at E3 2019 As for the games, the most-tweeted-about-newly-announced games were Final Fantasy VII Remake (@finalfantasyvii), CyberPunk2077 (@cyberpunkgame), Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (@ZeldaOfficialJP), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (@NintendoAmerica), and Marvel’s Avengers (@PlayAvengers). The gaming conversation on Twitter comes from all around the globe, and it was no different during E3. These were the countries that Tweeted the most about the event: United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Spain, and France. Bethesda event at E3 2019 During E3 itself last week, the most-tweeted-about games were Pokemon (@Pokemon), Fortnite (@FortniteGame), Splatoon (@SplatoonJP), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (@SmashBrosJP), and Apex Legends (@PlayApex). These were the moments that generated the most conversation on Twitter: Fans tweeting about their favorite announcements from Nintendo’s livestream Keanu Reeves showing up at #XboxE3 for CyberPunk 2077 The announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake & Marvel’s The Avengers game at the Square Enix press conference Keanu Reeves is in Cyberpunk 2077. In addition to being some of the most-discussed topics on Twitter, @Bethesda, @EA, @Nintendo, @SquareEnix, @Ubisoft, and @Xbox were all the No. 1 worldwide trend on Twitter during their respective E3 press conferences. The event itself — using hashtags #E3 and #E32019 — was also a top trend on Twitter last week. Hosted by @GeoffKeighley, @E3 brought their E3 Coliseum Live to Twitter for the first time ever, featuring exceptional guests including Elon Musk and Jack Black. “If you’re trying to figure out what others love, but you don’t love it, it’s very hard to make that great. So when you work on something, if you fall in love with it, that’s a good sign. Don’t worry about if others do. Swartz Report

After what felt like an eternity waiting since the last general Nintendo Direct happened way back in February (not counting the Pokémon or Super Mario Maker 2 presentations) Nintendo finally pulled back the curtain on what exactly it had up its sleeve for 2019 and beyond. The results, while certainly a mixed bag, were stronger […]
