Le Corso del Destino

Since classes have finished up for the year and summer “break” is now upon us (“break” is in quotes because research and lab work never stops haha), I thought I’d take the time to write a somewhat introductory and reminiscent post about Verdi’s Aida, especially as we are now closely approaching the beginning of the […]

SALINAS — The foundation for dominance in track and field at Hartnell College was set nearly four decades ago. Yet, the bar was raised this past season. New standards were established for others to emulate. Four members of the Panthers women’s state-ranked track and field and cross country teams added another honor to their mantel, receiving athletic scholarships. “I love having Hartnell’s seed spread around our country so more places can see how special our area is and what type of people it produces,” Hartnell track and cross country coach Chris Zepeda said. Headlining the contingent is two-time All-American Monica Ruelas, who is headed to the University of Alaska Anchorage, along with teammate Maria Aceves. Ruelas earned All-American status in cross country and track, putting her name among the elite at Hartnell in the 800 (2:21.0), 1,500 (4:52.0); 5,000 (18:03.0) and 10,000 (39.07.0). The former Gilroy distance ace was an All-American in the 1,500 and helped the Panthers win back-to-back Northern California track and field team titles. Aceves, who prepped at Notre Dame, was a two-time state meet qualifier in the 10,000 meters for the Panthers and a member of the state-ranked cross country team, which finished second at the state finals. Alaska-Anchorage has become a pipeline for former Panthers, who have gone north and given the program a boast in both sports over the past three years. “I always tell four-year coaches community college kids can make a huge difference for their programs,” Zepeda said. “These kids do the sport for the love of it. If they can gain acceptance to a school and reduce the cost of education, they’re extremely grateful.” Former North Salinas High standout Nina Arias is headed to Minot State University in North Dakota to run cross country and track for the Division II program. Last fall, Arias earned all-Northern California honors in cross country and advanced to the state meet in the 3,000 steeplechase. No one showed more improvement in two seasons at Hartnell than Jocelyn Cervantes, who has an athletic scholarship to Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont. Cervantes, who prepped at Greenfield High, was a Coast Conference champion in the 5,000 and 10,000, qualifying for the state meet in the 10,000 in 2018. “Each kid has different needs,” Zepeda said. “I feel they all did an amazing job in exploring their options and determining where they can continue their success.” In addition, Soledad High product Lauryn Orozco will walk on at CSU East Bay. She was a part of the highest finishing Panthers state cross country team in school history, earning all-conference honors in 2018 and 2019. On the men’s side, Nicholas Merillana has a scholarship to Minot State. Last year the former Alvarez High standout ran 1:58 in the 800, 4:01 in the 1,500, 15:36 in the 5,000 and 32:44 in the 10,000. Teammate Jacob Niles will run cross country at Notre Dame de Namur in the fall. A two-time all-conference distance runner, the Aptos High product was the Panthers’ top finisher at the state cross country finals last fall. “As a head coach, I couldn’t be more happy to see our kids find programs where they can continue their careers,” Zepeda said. The Panthers’ Jack Fling and Wyatt Connor will be preferred walk-ons next spring in track and field at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Fling, who prepped at Palma, won the Northern California pole vault title with a mark of 15-7. Connor, a Salinas High grad, was a NorCal finalist in the shot, discus and hammer.
