Thousands gathered for a memorial service and celebration of life for custom motorcycle builder Arlen Ness, known as the ‘king of custom motorcycles,’ at CrossWinds Church in Livermore, on Saturday, April 27, 2019. After the memorial service Ness’s son Cory, riding one of his father’s favorite custom motorcycles, “SmoothNess,” lead a multitude of motorcyclists to a gathering in his father’s honor at the Arlen Ness dealership and museum in Dublin. Ness died on March 22 after a long illness at age 79.

They’ll send off Arlen Ness, “the king of custom motorcycles,” in style. Hundreds of mourners are expected to attend a celebration of life Saturday, with many making a memorial ride on motorcycle from a church in Livermore to Dublin, site of the legendary Arlen Ness dealership and museum. At the front will be son Cory Ness. “I will be leading the ride with my boys, Zach and Max,” Cory said. “I will be riding my dad’s favorite bike, ‘SmoothNess.’ ” His brother-in-law Craig Foxworthy will be up there too. Ness, a designer whose wildly colorful customized motorcycles are sought after by riders and museums alike, died March 22. He was 79. Son Cory Ness will lead the procession riding his father’s favorite motorcycle, “SmoothNess.” (Photo courtesy of Arlen Ness Motorcycles) Both the legend of Ness and his business grew in Alameda County. Born in Minnesota but raised in San Lorenzo and San Leandro, he customized bikes at home before he set up shop on East 14th Street in San Leandro. As a young man, Ness earned money as a semipro bowler, parlaying $300 of winnings into his first motorcycle purchase, a 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead, according to Bay Area News Group archives. “I was into cars — hot rods,” Ness once recalled, according to a biography on the AMA Motorcycle Museum website. “On Friday nights, we’d cruise East 14th Street (in Oakland and San Leandro). That was what you did back then. There was a place where all the guys with bikes would hang out. I’d go by that place 20 times a night just to look at the bikes. I didn’t really know one from another, but I knew I liked the ones that had a low-slung look.” With just his high school shop experience, Ness took the Knucklehead apart, added a peanut-shaped gas tank, painted it green and entered it in a motorcycle show. Soon local bikers were visiting Ness, who made his own parts, asking him to customize their bikes, too. Ness received worldwide acclaim for his motorcycles. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2016, he earned the Sturgis Lifetime Achievement Award. The April 27 celebration of life will start at 10:30 a.m. at CrossWinds Church, 1660 Freisman Road in Livermore, which can seat 1,200. The group ride from Livermore to Arlen Ness Motorcycles, 6050 Dublin Blvd., will begin right after the service. In Dublin, an open house will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with presentations and proclamations starting at 1 p.m. Ness enthusiasts — especially members of the Hamsters club, which he founded to dispel the image of motorcyclists — are expected to fly in from around the country for the memorial. But that means they’ll have to leave their bikes at home, limiting the ride to primarily California motorcyclists. Nevertheless, the Ness dealership is planning for special parking to accommodate all those attending. “We have hired Dublin police to handle the overflow of traffic,” Cory said. “We have special parking on Dublin Boulevard and Scarlett Drive for motorcycles only.” Curbside traffic lanes will be coned off for motorcycle parking on Dublin Boulevard (between Scarlett Drive and Campbell Lane) and on Scarlett Drive (between Dublin Boulevard and the freeway). Watch for signs. To RSVP for the memorial ride and find details, go to Facebook.com/ArlenNess.
