LASSANA COULIBALY reckons Rangers can do the double over Rapid and secure the win their Euro hopes now hinge on. Steven Gerrard’s men WILL progress to the last 32 of the Europa League with victory in Vienna on December 13. Lassana Coulibaly reckons the Gers will go through to the last 32 The Austrains stunned Spartak Moscow just a few hours before heroic ten man Gers hung on for what could prove to be a precious point against Villarreal. The results mean all four sides can still qualify from Group G, but having swept past Rapid at Ibrox back last month, Coulibaly is confident Rangers can do so again. The midfielder said: “We are confident although this game will be different because it’s now about qualification. “They will do everything to be beat us as we beat them at home. Lassana Coulibaly tackles Jaume Costa “It will be very, very difficult to win there and we need to concentrate for them whole game, give our energy and hopefully qualify. “But we are confident having won the game at Ibrox so well. I think we will qualify. “We’d have taken this scenario at the start of the campaign. “We are still in a good position.” Steven Gerrard’s men need a win in Austria to have a chance at qualification Rangers would certainly have settled for a point when Daniel Candeias was sent off for a second bookable offence just before the break. The Portuguese had been shown a yellow card for a late tackle on Mario Gaspar when he became embroiled the game’s major talking point. There’s no doubt Candeias was late on Santiago Caseres, but it was clear James Tavernier was guilty of the first foul on the Villarreal defender. Daniel Candeias saw a second yellow for a challenge on Santiago Casares And Coulibaly insisted it was a major case of mistaken identity with Slovenian referee Matej Jug even telling the Rangers players it was his intention to book Tav. But after consulting with his assistant referee he instead sent off Candeias meaning Rangers played the entire second half with just ten men. Coulibaly claimed: “It was not Candeias who made the initial foul – it was Tav. “But it’s the referee’s decision so we can’t do anything about it. If the referee says Candeias then it’s Candeias. Daniel Candeias saw red for two bookings “We told him that it was Tav but he said no – that he saw Candeias. “He said it was No2, yet he showed the second yellow card to Candeias. But No2 is Tav. “I don’t understand that. “So we can’t do anything now.” Ryan Jack challenges Santi Cazorla for the ball Coulibaly is confident Gers would have won the match had the referee not reduced them to then men. He said: “We felt confident with the way the game was going. At ten against 11 you still have some chances to score. Glenn Middleton had one, but was offside. GERS RAP Rangers face Uefa rap after fan ‘tries to confront linesman’ after Daniel Candeias’ red “We showed a lot of character, especially in the second half, but that is because we know we can still qualify. “Even with all 11 men on the park we knew that against Villarreal it would be very hard. Glenn Middleton thought he had opened the scoring for the Gers but it was ruled out for offside “But when it went ten v 11 we knew we had to work hard. It was a really tough night for all the players in that respect. “We had to dig really deep because we played the entire second half with only ten men. “In the end, it was a very good point for us because we are still alive in the competition and we know what we know need to do. “We will give everything against Rapid Vienna to get our qualification.” Allan McGregor made numerous excellent saves Allan McGregor once again emerged as the hero for Rangers with a truly world class display. He made two stunning first half stops, followed by three after the break. Coulibaly is in no doubt he’s the best he’s ever played with – hailing his performance against Villarreal. The Mali international added: “Everyone gave all their energy so he was happy for that. RANGERS 0 VILLARREAL 0 McGregor stars as Gers hang on for draw after Candeias’ sending off “Of course, he has saved the team a lot and he is helping us very well. “I hope that he keeps helping the team. “Yes, he is the best goalkeeper that I have played with. I have played in Ligue 1 with Bastia and Angers, but he is the best keeper. Rapid Wien will be knocked off top spot of their Europa League group if Rangers secure a home win over the Austrains on Thursday evening. The Gers began their European campaign with a super 2-2 draw against Villarreal, and they take on current Group G leaders Rapid with the Austrian side in crisis. Rapid beat Spartak Moscow in their own Europa League opener, but since then manager Goran Djuricin has been sacked with the club sitting in the bottom half of the Austrian Bundesliga; they’ve won just two of their nine matches so far, losing four. Rangers followed up their draw in Spain by thrashing St Johnstone and Ayr, though they head into Thursday’s clash on the back of a shock 1-0 defeat at Livingston, which kept Steven Gerrard’s side eight points off top spot in the Scottish Premiership. [article-rail-section title=”Latest Europa League news” posts_category=”1831″ posts_number=”12″ query_type=”recent” /] What the managers are saying Steven Gerrard (Rangers): “We expect a very strong Rapid team having just appointed a new manager. It is a difficult one to judge as the new manager as only had one training session so we are unsure what to expect. We respect this team but we are looking for a win tomorrow. This is a level that we all want to be involved in and to show Rapid how good a team we are at home.” Dietmar Kuhbauer (Rapid Wien): “For me, of course, it’s a huge story to be at the Ibrox Stadium for my first match in charge. However, you can not expect any miracles right now, so let us get to know our players first.” Kuhbauer was appointed Rapid manager earlier this week Team news Rangers will be without Lee Wallace, as well as long-term absentee Jamie Murphy. Ryan Jack is a doubt as he recovers from a calf injury. Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo and Philipp Schobesberger will miss out for the visitors. Confirmed line-ups Rangers: McGregor, Tavernier, Worrall, Goldson, Flanagan, Arfield, Coulibaly, Ejaria, Kent, Morelos, Candeias. Subs: Foderingham, Halliday, Katic, Barisic, Grezda, Lafferty, Middleton. Rapid Vienna: Strebinger, Muldur, Barac, Sonnleitner, Potzmann, Schwab, Ivan, Murg, Ljubicic, Berisha, Pavlovic. Subs: Knoflach, Bolingoli Mbombo, Martic, Dibon, Auer, Knasmullner, Alar.

RAPID VIENNA have sacked boss Goran Djuricin just days before their Europa League clash with Rangers. Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by St Polten means the Austrians have lost four of their opening nine games in the Bundesliga. Goran Djuricin on the touchline Djuricin was already under pressure after allegedly making a gesture to his own supporters after they defeated lower league side Mattersburg on penalties in the Austrain Cup. The weekend loss was the last straw for Rapid chiefs who pulled the plug on the 43-year-old ahead of Thursday’s game against the Light Blues. Thomas Hickersberger and Martin Bernhard have taken over and could find themselves in charge for the Group G clash at Ibrox. Vienna sporting director Fredy Bickel said: “Goran Djuricin has done everything for the club, but he also understands that we now had to opt for a change of direction. Steven Gerrard is preparing his side to face Rapid Vienna “The good of the team and the club is the most important thing. We have to try this step to stop the spiral. This was the right step, even if he had a hard time. “It’s a vicious circle that started somewhere and turned faster and faster. Now is the time to interrupt it. “There is a meeting of the board on Monday and we will decide on our plans for the match against Rangers this week. “We have an image in our head of what this team needs and who the new coach should be. The team are intelligent and sensitive and we need someone who matches that.” Despite their poor league start Djuricin’s side defeated Spartak Moscow 2-0 in their opening Europa League match to top their group. Bickel admits he hoped the penalty shoot-out win over Mattersburg would prove to be a turning point on the domestic front, but he insists they had to act after their latest defeat. He added: “I honestly hoped the Mattersburg game could have been the liberation, but today it has been seen that it was not.
