A Day In The Life Of Titch

So I’ve got to the point of the conversion where I’m reminding myself I can’t rush things too much. And today (has been the perfect example of that. I’ve been wanting to rip out the old plywood walls, start putting up the insulation then look at getting new plywood to cover. Obviously, to do all […]

FORMULATED to save you time and money, a little bit of effort goes a long way with this choice of car shampoos. We know. You’ve used a drop of Fairy in a bucket for years. There’s actually a lot more to car shampoo than you might think. Firstly, if you can pre-wash with a pressure washer you’re streets ahead. Pressure washers lift off excess dirt before you smear it (and all the abrasive particles contained within it) all over your pristine paintwork. A couple of pressure washer car shampoos we’ve recommended would be Halfords’ own, which is suitable for any pressure-washing, cars included; or Autoglym’s Polar Blast pre-wash. Once you’ve lifted off the bulk of that debris, it’s time to get soapy. Some car shampoos are suitable for a weekly scrub down, pH balanced and won’t remove any wax protection—often topping up what’s already there. Others strip everything back ready to start detailing all over again, so take care when buying that you get exactly what you need. It’s also worth using two buckets—one for rinsing—so the grit is separated from shampoo solution and you don’t create swirl marks or scratch the paintwork. Alternatively, you can invest in a grit guard which sits at the bottom of the bucket. We like this two-pack from Amazon. And so, onto our top picks for car shampoo for 2019.   Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner 500ml Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner £8, from Halfords – buy here Auto Express’ 2019 test winner, this two-in-one is like Head and Shoulders for your motor. You can buy a bigger 2.5l bottle, if you’ve got the storage space and that offers even better value, but you don’t need a lot of Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, since its concentrated. A pH neutral formula, this car shampoo breaks down grease and grime, leaving a water repellent finish. It’s suitable for all paint types, including matte finishes and the suds wash away easily, drying to a respectable shine. This little 500ML should do you for around 25 washes. Maxed Power Shampoo and Ultra Wax Maxed Power Shampoo and Ultra Wax £8.70, from Amazon – buy here Well known on the race circuit, Maxed Power sees its fair share of grit and grime. This slightly alkaline formula doesn’t strip wax coatings but will shift the grease and dirt built up on the bodywork and wheels. Fans like this formula since the foam lasts for the whole wash and the wax seal, which forces water to bead very quickly, will win over even the most hardened skeptics. This 1-litre bottle also offers good value-for-money since you shouldn’t need more than four capfuls to get a great clean. Angelwax Shampoo Angelwax Shampoo £11, for Amazon – buy here Claiming to be the purest formula, what Angelwax lacks in no-nonsense marketing, it by far makes up for in performance. Its products get the job done and this Superior Automotive Shampoo is no different. Using only natural products, this is a great choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies, since it doesn’t contain any detergents. Nonetheless, it fights it out proudly to remove grease and grime from the road, without creating streaks. It is a pricier choice, but a little goes a long way so this has staying power. Simoniz Protection Car Wash Simoniz Protection Car Wash £17.99, from Amazon – buy here This Simoniz beast looks truly budget-breaking when set amongst others on this list, but this price tag is for a 5-litre value pack. If you’ve got the storage, this is a worthy shampoo and wax combination for multi-car households. Cleaning to a deep finish, this formula won’t strip existing wax but will remove deposits and leaves behind a shine that will also help your car’s paintwork to repel dirt and water. The dual-action formula helps you save time cleaning the car by getting more than one thing done at a time. Meguiars Wash & Wax Anywhere Meguiars Wash & Wax Anywhere £16, from Halfords – buy here This multi-award winning formula is a great choice for apartment dwellers who have no easy access to water or handy for those times you’re not able to do a full wash. Apply by spraying sparingly and rubbing with a microfibre cloth, Meguiar’s Wash and Wax Anywhere will lift off light dirt and leave a protective coating of wax behind, giving your motor a sparkling showroom shine. Using its chemistry knowhow, Meguiar’s combine a polymer to create a synthetic gloss finish that lasts for weeks. Pricey, but saves you time and money in the long term. Halfords Car Wash 2.5 Litre Halfords Car Wash 2.5 Litre £6, from Halfords – buy here A commendable effort from Halfords makes other brands look painfully expensive. This high-foam formula has won awards in the past and though technology has given some brands the edge on perfomance, it’s hard to beat Halfords Car Wash on price. You don’t need to use a lot of it to shift the grease and grime from the weekly commute. What’s more, it leaves a waxy finish that will dry streak-free with a bit of effort from you and your handy microfibre cloth. Well, there had to be a bit of work involved. CarPlan Triplewax Car Shampoo 1 Litre CarPlan Triplewax Car Shampoo 1 Litre £4, from Halfords – buy here Fans of Triplewax Car Shampoo love the performance and price. Lasting 30 washes, this one-litre formula contains a powerful detergent that will remove dirt and debris from your bodywork, tyres and trim, without damaging the paintwork. The streak-free shine is result of not a lot of effort but this is a formula better suited to washing before waxing. Although there is a residual Triplewax protective layer, this is not sufficient enough to just dry off and go. Head to our guide on polishes for advice on what to apply next. Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner £12, from Halfords – buy here When time is of the essence, or the kids are bawling after spilling something, you just want an easy life. A product that is safe, easy-to-use and close-at-hand. this all-purpose cleaner is your best friend. Suitable for a veritable medley of surfaces and material types, it’s tougher than household cleaners on tar, grease and other stains but gentle enough to not damage paintwork or gloss surfaces. For use inside and outside the car, Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner is your best option. While pricey, you’re paying for convenience since this product can even been used on carpets. Farecla G3 Body Prep Shampoo 500ml Farecla G3 Body Prep Shampoo 500ml £7, from Halfords – buy here Used by professionals to strip a vehicle of all previous detailing efforts and starting from scratch, the award-winning G3 Body Prep Shampoo is a reasonably priced power-monster of a cleaner. There’s not a great deal of foam to be had, as it looses dirt and grime. This shampoo is especially useful if you’re looking to make a repair and need a completely sanitised surface. Like others a little goes a long way. Once you’ve finished shampooing, check out our guides to polishes and waxes so you can set about re-sealing your paintwork’s showroom shine. WET weather and road debris won’t kill your shine and paintwork if you take some time out twice a year to wax your car. ‘Wax-on, wax-off’, those infamous words muttered by Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid wasn’t just a defence technique for Daniel-san. Wax is one of the best ways of keeping your car properly protected from the elements. Needing only two to four mornings a year out of your calendar, waxing your paintwork is a surefire way of reducing depreciation and minimising repairs, by preventing rusting. Though long ago, polishes and waxes were separate products, with different designations, nowadays, they can be interchangeable, so be sure to check out our guide on Best Car Polishes. If the wax you buy doesn’t come with its own applicator and cloth, it’s worth investing in a decent set of pads and microfibre cloths. The pads stay lint-free, while the wax goes on and the technology in microfibre encourages dust to stick to the cloth via static, so it doesn’t get caught up in your detailing job. Both products can be washed (pads by hand, cloths in the machines) and resused, so you’re saving money and the environment—and getting a better finish—by laying off the kitchen roll. For pads, we love Meguiar’s Soft Foam pads £5.99 for since they are easy-to-hold and apply wax evenly. We also recommend this ten-pack of microfibre cloths from Halfords, since £5 gets you three colours, which you can assign for different tasks – so as to not contaminate the fabric, i.e. Wash, Dry, Buff Polish/Wax. Good waxes encourage water to bead and make the weekly car wash significantly easier and quicker. What are you waxing for? Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax £16.25, from Amazon – buy here Multiple award-winning Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax has long been a detailer’s favourite since ease-of-use means a fast job. The price of the double-speed wax includes a polishing cloth and applicator. There’s a wait after application of the wax to allow the product to ‘haze’ or ‘dull’, i.e. the film prepares to be buffed. This works best after a car has been shampooed and clayed, where all the tiny specks of debris have been lifted from the paintwork’s surface. Soft99 Fusso Coat Dark Soft99 Fusso Coat Dark £27, from Amazon – buy here Japanese manufacturer Soft99 has both dark and light formulas of its protective coating. This dark car wax is the most expensive in our list, but if you’re really committed to waxing your car and want an award-winning finish, Soft99’s car wax will deliver. You use the wax sparingly and need to be sure to buff before the wax dries on, or you’ll give yourself a longer job. Fans love this because it repels dirt and water so effectively. Angelwax The Fifth Element Angelwax The Fifth Element £25.15, from Amazon – buy here One of our pricier options the Angelwax Fifth Element is formulated for those wanting to put their motors in competitions. There’s a mystery fifth element, and whatever the secret ingredient, it works. Price includes a cloth and applicator, which make putting it on and buffing to a shine very easy, though it still doesn’t go too far to explain that price. Perhaps the fifth element is water from the moon? Turtlewax Super Hard Shell Turtlewax Super Hard Shell £7.50, from Halfords – buy here Turtle Wax Original claims to be the one that started it all. Based on the original 1950’s formula, this Super Hard Shell offers easy -on, easy-off shine and though not as easy to apply as others on our list, it doesn’t come with a painful price tag. With a bit of elbow grease, this unique blend of cleaners and waxes remove ingrained dirt, light oxidation and puts a protective sheen on your paintwork that will last for at least a few washes. Meguiars Ultimate Liquid Wax Meguiars Ultimate Liquid Wax £29.99 – from Halfords – buy here Meguiar’s Ultimate Liquid Wax is a little easier to apply than a conventional paste, though you have to be careful not to overapply and waste the product. The ‘hydrophobic-wax’-based formula offers a mirror-like shine and helps to reduce the appearance of swirl marks you might get from that classic ‘wax-on, wax-off’ technique. You really don’t need much so that bottle is essentially a lifetime’s supply. Joking aside, using the applicator pads we mentioned in the introduction will definitely help manage amounts used. Auto Finesse Glisten Wax Auto Finesse Glisten Wax 11.95, from Halfords – buy here This mid-priced spray wax is for those short on time. Detailing without the detail, so to speak, Auto Finesse Glisten is marketed as a way of waxing in between more thorough cleans. The spray nozzle makes for easy application, particularly in places that are harder to reach—just spray and buff with a microfibre cloth. A little bit like a waterless wash, this is a useful option for apartment dwellers, or for times when life is getting in the way. Unlike more serious waxes, this Auto Finesse formula is also suitable for matte paint and wraps, as well as gloss paint finishes. Farecla G3 Super Gloss Paste Wax Farecla G3 Super Gloss Paste Wax £27, from Halfords – buy here Farecla is another brand in the market for the serious detailers. Blended to ensure even application, Farecla insists drivers put it on with its G3 Applicator Waffle Pads. Offering protection for up to six months, G3 Super Gloss Paste Wax reduces the need to wax the car more than twice a year, which is just as well, as the paste formula isn’t as quick to apply as others in our list. Still, the high-grade carnauba wax content leaves a superb finish. For those that prefer a spray wax, check out the G3 Professional Sealant in our car polish guide. Chemical Guys Butter Wet Wax Cream Chemical Guys Butter Wet Wax Cream £19.99, from Amazon – buy here 100% Carnauba, this Chemical Guys Butter Wet Wax Cream has been formulated to have a butter-like consistency, hence the name. This means it’s much easier to apply than traditional heavier waxes. The natural ingredients used by this US brand will have great appeal to those looking for a more environmentally friendly option. The finish is showroom quality and despite the price tag, this is a firm favourite amongst detailers as it doesn’t leave dust behind after hazing—reason enough to justify the more expensive cost.
