Industrial applications include battery-powered power tools, professional power supplies, and telecoms infrastructure equipment. Functional requirements of advanced industrial applications In the field of high power industrial applications, high efficiency, and the ability to withstand even very high currents are required. MOSFET power transistors (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors) are particularly suitable for various applications in the field of power electronics. One of the essential features of a MOSFET is its ability to withstand even very high working currents, excellent performance, robustness, and reliability. The LFPAK88 MOSFET offers excellent performance and high reliability. The LFPAK88 package is designed for small footprint and higher power density than the old metal cable packages like D²PAK, for today’s high power automotive applications with space constraints. Furthermore, the thin package and the copper clip allow the LFPAK88 to be extremely thermally efficient. LFPAK copper clip technology improves wire bond packagesby increased maximum current capacity and excellent current diffusion, improved RDSon, low source inductance, and low thermal resistance (Rth). These systems find applications in 12 V automotive systems, 48 V DC/DC systems, higher power motors, lamps and solenoid control, protection against polarity reversal, LED lighting, very high-performance power switching. The new LFPAK88 product: features and functionality Nexperia announced at PCIM 2019 a new package in its MOSFET and LFPAK family which, when combined with its latest silicon technology, results in 40 V MOSFETs delivering at low RDS(on) of 0.7 mΩ. LFPAK88 devices replace larger power packages such as D²PAK and D²PAK-7, and measuring 8 x 8 mm offer a footprint reduction of 60%, and a 64% lower profile. With LFPAK88 you get 60% of space efficiency. Unlike other packages where internal bond wires often limit performance, LFPAK88 devices use the copper-clip and solder die to attach construction, resulting in low electrical & thermal resistance, good current spreading and heat dispersal. Besides, the thermal mass of copper-clip also reduces hot spot formation, which results in improved avalanche energy (Eas) and linear-mode (SOA) performance. The maximum rating of 425 A and low RDS (on) of 0.7 mΩ in small package size, presents a market-leading power density of 48 times when compared to D²PAK devices. Finally, the LFPAK88, with its low-stress gull-wing leads is more rugged and thermally robust package, delivering reliability levels more than two times better than is required by AEC-Q101. By combining the LFPAK88 with silicon technology, MOSFETs that deliver 48x power density of D²PAK can be obtained. This proves that Nexperia, the inventor of the LFPAK, is still the leader in this technology. With the new LFPAK88, Nexperia aims to improve the industry-leading LFPAK family based on over 15 years of experience in manufacturing high-reliability LFPAK products. Figure 1: the product series of the LFPAK family With LFPAK88, it is possible to bring the power density to the next level. The power density factor of LFPAK88 is expressed in  x RDS(on)/volume ] and is equal to 5x for TOLG, 23x for D²PAK-7 and 48x for D²PAK. Figure 2: LFPAK88 Features The compact 8 mm x 8 mm footprint of the LFPAK88 provides market-leading space efficiency, with up to 60% footprint saving compared to D²PAK and D²PAK-7 alternatives. In addition, it’s 1.6 mm height increases the overall space efficiency to 86%. The versatility of the LFPAK88 makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications, as automotive, power steering, ABS braking, DC/DC conversion, reverse battery protection, industrial, battery-powered power tools, power supply equipment, and telecom infrastructure. As the industry demands more space savings, power density, and current handling capabilities, Nexperia’s latest copper clip package delivers significant improvements. Combining low RDS(on) and high ID, the LFPAK88 sets the benchmark for power density to over 1 W/mm³ (Figure 1 and 2). Portfolio Nexperia has a broad portfolio of more than 10000 products.
