If you’re a high school basketball fan then this weekend will be a good one for you. Three showcase events are scheduled, and some of the top Southern California teams will be facing off. Here is a primer: Take Flight Challenge The two-day event kicks off Friday at Redondo High. This is the event’s sixth year. Last year’s event took place at Cerritos College. Friday’s session starts with Liberty of Nevada taking on Birmingham at 3 p.m. Top-ranked Westchester will take on host Redondo at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Redondo girls against Long Beach Poly at 6 p.m. The final two games will feature Mission Bay against Long Beach Poly at 7:30 p.m. with Camarillo closing out the day against Santa Margarita. The first session Saturday gets underway at 9:30 a.m. as Culver City takes on Crossroads. At 11 a.m., Windward faces Chaminade followed by Loyola against View Park at 12:30 p.m. and Leuzinger taking on Los Altos at 2 p.m. The second session Saturday begins at 4 p.m. with Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks taking on Liberty of Nevada, followed by Alemany-Brentwood at 5:30 p.m., Harvard-Westlake vs. Mayfair at 7 p.m. and Bishop Montgomery taking on Sheldon of Sacramento at 8:30 p.m. Westchester Challenge Westchester High is the site Saturday for the one-day Westchester Challenge. The action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with a junior varsity game. The Westchester girls will kick off the varsity action at 11 a.m. against Compton. Rancho Dominguez faces South East at 12:30 p.m., followed by Roosevelt-Bakersfield (2 p.m.), Santa Monica-Van Nuys (3:30 p.m.), Dorsey-West Torrance (5 p.m.), Hart-Rolling Hills Prep (6:30 p.m.) and Westchester will conclude the night against Long Beach Poly at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Real Run Winter Challenge This event will take place Saturday at Firebaugh High in Lynwood. Carson opens the event against Ribet Academy at 9 a.m. The rest of the schedule: La Salle-King Drew (10:30 a.m.), Sweetwater-Birmingham (noon), San Ysidro-Serra (1:30 p.m.), Millikan-Lynwood (3 p.m.), Compton-Narbonne (4:30 p.m.), Hesperia-Camarillo (6 p.m.), Crenshaw-St. Bernard (7:30 p.m.) and San Gabriel Academy-Washington Prep (9 p.m.). Tickets are $10. Firebaugh High School is located at 5246 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. All-Area football banquet set for Jan. 16. The annual banquet honoring the Daily Breeze All-Area football team, presented by the South Bay Athletic Club, will take place Jan. 16 at noon. The event will be at the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge (315 Esplanade), south of the Redondo Pier. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The public is invited. Price of admission is $20. The outstanding El Camino and L.A. Harbor College football players will also be recognized at the banquet. Polynesian All-American Bowl set for Saturday There are several area players scheduled to participate Saturday in the AIGA Foundation’s eighth annual Polynesian All-American Bowl. The game will be played at St. John Bosco High. Kickoff is at noon. Among the players participating are Carson’s Avirex Aupiu, Jokori Moe, Dillanger Onosa’I, Frisco Taoete, Narbonne’s Vincent Tucker and Juice Tupua, North’s Brayden DeOcampo and Lawndale’s Naki Fahina. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (ages six-17) and available at the gate or online at eventbrite.com.
