When the recent All-NBA selections were announced, there was much debate and consternation over one notable snub, Golden State Warriors shooting guard, Klay Thompson. Thompson, who seemed unfazed by the proverbial snub seemingly blew the whole drama off in typical Klay style in simply replying “That’s cool and all…but I’d rather win championships!” When asked […]

SAN JOSE — UNLV-bound softball pitcher Jessica Rodriquez was well on her way to padding her eye-popping career stats after the first inning of the Central Coast Section Division I Championship on Saturday. She struck out the side in order. Then the second inning happened. No. 3 seed Aragon of San Mateo used one hit, three walks, a hit batter and a fielding error to put up four runs. The top-seeded Wildcatz, D-I champions two years ago, never recovered and fell 6-1 at PAL Stadium. “I really wanted to win this game, but I’m really proud of my team for making it this far,” Rodriquez said. “Right now, I’m thinking I need to work a lot harder to get to that college level.” This slideshow requires JavaScript. All four of the runs came after Rodriquez though she struck out Elisa Joe with one out and the bases loaded. The glitter-covered eye black on the many of the Wildcatz’s cheeks was smeared after they wiped away tears and exchanged long, cherished post-game hugs. They passed around a second-place trophy during photos knowing they had a better game in them. After all, they had beaten the Dons in nonleague action earlier this season. They were just unable to get one last win last win when they wanted and needed it most. “They hit pitcher’s mistakes, they did what they were supposed to do,” Rodriquez said. “I didn’t do what I was supposed to do.” Watsonville (23-5), the runner-up in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division, scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Jazmyn Martinez singled off University of South Dakota-bound pitcher Holly Fletcher with one out and scored on sophomore Anastacia Alba’s two-out single. Fletcher, mixing up speeds and locations of her pitches well, recorded a strikeout to escape further damage and strand a pair of runners on base, including Juliana Wilson at third. The Wildcatz got runners on base in each of the next two innings, but went quietly in the seventh, when Fletcher finished with two more strikeouts to finish with 11. It was Aragon’s first section title. “I was crying; I was happy. I was so overcome with emotions I just started bawling,” Fletcher said. “Just to be a part of that is amazing.” Using her screwball and curve ball to paint the corners and rise to get batters to chase pitches, Fletcher found success in her second meeting against Watsonville. “Knowing their lineup really helped,” she said of her outing, a 5-3 loss, on March 16. Aragon (22-6), led by UCLA-committed shortstop Megan Grant and standout catcher Olivia DiNardo, added one run in the fifth and seventh innings for the final score. The Dons, the co-runner-up with San Mateo in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division, entered the game ranked No. 44 in the state by maxpreps.com, while the Wildcatz checked in at No. 60. Rodriquez, who amassed 65 wins in her stellar career, finished one win shy of a second CCS title. She, along with Wilson, fellow senior Emily Ornelas, and Martinez, a junior, helped the Wildcatz win the D-I crown as sophomore — making the Wildcatz the first team from Santa Cruz County to ever win a CCS title in the sport. They fell brutally short of adding to their legacy. Rodriguez, who entered the final with 704 strikeouts and a 1.09 ERA over 475 2/3 career innings, finished with a five-hitter, striking out eight batters. Wilson, a senior catcher committed to Central Florida, began playing catch with Rodriguez well before entering junior high “It was amazing catching Jessica,” said Wilson, pausing to fight off tears. “Years and years catching her, being my best friend for 15-plus years, ever since the beginning of when we started softball. I was the one who would always catch her. … She proved herself. And she is leaving her mark on Watsonville’s softball team. She’s an amazing pitcher. I know if she puts all of her effort and heart out on that field, she can do anything. “I give props to her for going through the ups and downs, having to take the loss, because that’s what people mostly focus on. But she’s very tough. She’s one hell of a pitcher and I’m proud of her.” Contact Jim Seimas at 831-706-3256. The Score Aragon 6, Watsonville 1 Up next: End of season
