The seemingly pointless ‘game’ has sparked fears among doctors and parents after videos of children eating plastic have emerged. Here’s what we know so far. What is the “Shell On Challenge”? Kids have been filming themselves eating food with the ‘shells’ on and posting the ‘hilarious’ videos on Snapchat. Worryingly, as well as scoffing fruit like bananas with the peel still on, teens have been eating food still in the plastic and cardboard packaging. Obviously, this fad isn’t as bad as the ‘Tide Pod Challenge’ which saw people eating laundry detergent pods,  but doctors are still concerned over the consumption of plastic. This radio host in the US even gives it a go live on air These two eat a banana and an egg with the shell and skin on Why is it dangerous? Chicago-area physician Max Plitt told New York Post: “Organic material like fruit peels are typically not dangerous. Zest is often used in recipes (lemon zest) which is the shavings of the rind. “Eating plastic, on the other hand, can be dangerous. BPA has been suggested to influence hormones. Chemicals in PVC like vinyl chloride have been linked to cancers.” A recent video posted to Snapchat shows Liam Hamm, a sophomore at McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona, biting through a plastic bag filled with carrots.
