Max Azria, the founder of fashion brand BCBXMAXAZRIA and longtime designer of celeb-favorite Hervé Léger, has died at the age of 70. According to WWD, he passed away on Monday, May 6, at a hospital in Houston following a battle with lung cancer. Born in Tunisia in 1949, the designer was raised in France before moving to the United States, and all of those cultures influenced his trend-driven design aesthetic. In addition to its red carpet atelier and New York Fashion Week collections, BCBG, which is a French acronym for “bon chic, bon genre,” (i.e. good style, good attitude), had a ready-to-wear component that could be found in department stores and its own boutiques around the globe. Building on his successful, celeb-fave occasion wear business, Azria acquired French fashion label Hervé Léger in 1998, and he relaunched the couturier in 2007 with his now infamous curve-hugging bandage dresses that immediately became a red carpet staple (hi, Kim Kardashian and fam!). But by 2016, the BCBXMAXAZRIA Group was dealing with financial troubles and Azria left the company. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the following year and was ultimately acquired by Marquee Brands. In an effort to revitalize the brand’s image, celeb stylist Kate Young has joined as creative consultant alongside creative director Bernd Kroeberof. The late founder’s wife, Lubov, meanwhile, serves as creative director of the BCBXMAXAZRIA Group. Azria is survived by his wife and six children. [jwplayer 5rU2s7a1-l3ahXupL]

Gone, but not forgotten. World-famous fashion designer Max Azria has reportedly died at 70 years old. The founder of BCBGMAXAZRIA and former designer for Herve Leger is survived by his six children — Michael, Chloe, Marine, Agnes, Anais and Joyce — and wife of 27 years, Lubov Azria. Max passed away after a battle with lung cancer on Monday, May 6, in a Houston hospital, according to multiple outlets. Throughout the duration of his notable career, he dressed major celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and many more. Shortly after news broke, several A-listers and media personnel flocked to social media to share kind words about Max. “We lost a legend today. RIP, Max Azria. May his memory always be a blessing,” HelloGiggles co-founder Rivka Sophia Rossi wrote on Twitter. “The world has lost another gentle giant and legend, @MaxAzria. He was not just a visionary, he was also the patriarch of one the most amazing families I have been privileged enough to know. My love and condolences go out to beautiful @LubovAzria and the entire Azria family,” added songwriter and producer Donnie Demers. Fans also chimed in with their special memories of the BCBGMAXAZRIA brand. “I wore a BCBG x Max Azria dress on my 25th birthday. RIP,” someone wrote. “Wearing one of my many BCBG blazers today. RIP, Max Azria,” echoed another. At this time, Max’s family has yet to provide a comment on his passing. However, it’s clear that people all over the world are mourning his immense loss.  The fashion industry has faced several deaths in 2019, including longtime creative director of Chanel and Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld. Karl, too, passed away from cancer. Our condolences go out to fans, friends and the entire Azria family during this difficult time. We will continue to honor his legacy and admire his unparalleled talent.
