Contrary to popular belief, not all pageant queens begin as toddlers in tiaras. Sometimes life throws a crown at you when you least expect it. That is what happened to reigning Miss Blacksburg, Anah Taylor, who began her pageant career at 20 years old after she needed “something to keep [her] busy,” after a season-ending […]

Becca's Booklist

The Fault in our Stars by John Green This is hands down one of my all time favorite books. I love this book. The first time I read it was around the time the movie was supposed to be coming out and I had never read any of John Green’s other novels and I honestly […]

FIRST DATE, WORST DATE EVER!

“I like the way you dance,” he said to me last Saturday afternoon. Margo and I had gone to Vino Godfather, a cool little winery in an old Victorian Island on Mare Island in Vallejo. The island used to be a naval base, judging from the abandoned barracks on the way to the winery. A […]

Dear Friends Here we are again! I like these catchups. As usual I use Facebook and my blog a lot so again this year will recap rather than give lots of details. First – I continue to miss Glen. I am certain that will never change. Life is still good! just different. Second – Family […]

Beautiful Becca

I’ve had my share of difficult Christmases… While, at the time, I would have much rather just had a happy “normal” Christmas, I’m grateful for the way it opened my eyes to “the other side” of Christmas. For people who have suffered a bereavement (or just any kind of loss): Christmas is hard. It can […]

“This is my fighting album. It’s letting people know that if I can get through my shit, then you can get through yours”  The weird and wonderful Marmozets return with their 2nd LP – Knowing What You Know Now and the Yorkshire rockers show no signs of second album syndrome. The heavier songs […]

Hozzie Writes

When planning our trip to Seoul we found out about Lotte World and decided to take a visit. I think theme park days are necessary in long trips because although I love sight-seeing it can be good to have a day of fun where you don’t have to worry about rushing to the next thing […]

CHICO — “Christmas, stockings and kids — what’s not to love?” said Patricia Wang, looking over the piles and boxes of Christmas stockings she has been collecting for children affected by the Camp Fire. Wang, a former teacher and school principal, felt a huge need to help people who had suffered losses in Paradise. She started Stuff a Stocking, a holiday project for children from Paradise. Stuffed stockings have been dropped off at Eighth and Main Antique Center. The antique center donated space just to be helpful, Wang said. Thursday Wang and a volunteer, Becca Gilgert, met there to pick up the latest donations for Stuff a Stocking. Wang said starting Stuff a Stocking was a way to fine-tune her energy for helping victims of the fire. “At first, I was helping all over the place, none of which was very effective. Then I decided to do this,” she said. “I put it on Facebook, and right away I got 200 shares from one group.” Gilgert said she saw Stuff a Stocking on a friend’s Facebook. “I wanted to do something,” she said. “I think a lot of people feel that way.” By now, Wang and friends and volunteers have organized stockings sent to her from across the country. She put a flyer Facebook, describing how people could Stuff a Stocking and donate it. They are asked to donate for girls or boys, in several age groups. Now that the drive is about over, nothing is needed for toddlers or teenagers, she said. But stockings are still needed for ages kindergarten through fifth grade, especially boys. “We’re giving stockings to all kids who attended Paradise schools, but not high schools,” said Wang. She has enough stockings, she’s pretty sure. “Now I have 500 stockings boxed up, with 100 more in my living room. I think we’ll have about 800,” she said, wheeling a cart full of more stockings out to her car. “This really isn’t about me. It’s about how people cared to help with this. I have received stockings from all over California, some from Arkansas, and some from New York,” said Wang. “Little kids are even getting involved. There have been notes from them attached to the stockings.” Some of the stockings are homemade. “Look how beautiful this is,” she said, holding up a green and blue flannel stocking with white ribbon and a reindeer print. She asks that people who plan to contribute a stocking do it by today at Eighth and Main Antiques. She also asks that they follow the guidelines on the flyer on Facebook at “Stuff a Stocking for #ButteCountyStrong.” For example, cost to fill a stocking should be $9-11, because “anybody can afford that,” Wang said. “That includes a $5 gift card. For a child who has been through so much, it provides some choice.” Gift cards can be dropped off at Eighth and Main Antiques anytime. Wang, Gilgert and other volunteers will distribute the stockings to schools where Paradise children are now students next week. Wang said Stuff a Stocking has been the perfect giving project for this specific need. “I’m happy I did this. It is a feel-good event, indeed,” Wang said.
