Bill Belichick

It’s been a habit of mine to call out folks on the internet and the media when they say the Patriots are done. Basically, the Patriots aren’t done until they say they are done. That would mean they are done when Tom Brady retires from the game of football — or is traded away — […]

“I’m too old you’re too slow F*ck that,” said Tom Brady as he embraced Chris Hogan, after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 37-31 in OT of the AFC Championship game. The New England Patriots were heading to their 3rd straight Superbowl and 4th in 5 years. Business as usual because fast forward two weeks later […]

PHOENIX — Well, that certainly didn’t take long. The tears of those bemoaning Rob Gronkowksi’s retirement announcement had not even dried when his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, already was sharing with a national TV audience a scenario in which his client could be back in a Patriots uniform for part of the upcoming season. [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”curated” curated_ids=”1591925,1518348,1591975″] Speaking with Mike Greenberg, host of ESPN’s “Get Up,” Rosenhaus said: “If the team was struggling or they needed him at some point next year, and let’s just say, hypothetically, Tom Brady gave him a call and said, “Rob, I need you,’ I wouldn’t be shocked if he came back to play a few games.” It’s not an outlandish thought. The season starts with Gronkowski in a recliner, coming no closer to the football field than his remote allows. With each week of distance put on his most recent game, Super Bowl LIII, his body hurts a little less. He realizes he misses the adrenaline boost that only a Sunday in pads can provide. He hits the gym to begin building his body, just in case, likes how his fresher body is responding, starts to watch more football, misses it even more. The Patriots suffer either an injury at tight end or are struggling to find consistency at the position. Brady asks for the order and Gronk can’t say no. Speaking to reporters Monday at the annual NFL meetings, Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald was asked how hard it would be for a player to come out of retirement in midseason. “Have you seen that guy?” Fitzgerald said. “I think he’ll be just fine. There’s nothing wrong with missing a couple of weeks of training camp … how fresh he would be coming off. I think that could be a secret weapon for them down the stretch.” Fitzgerald captured what Gronkowski has meant to the NFL. “He’s a Hall of Famer and he’s a Hall of Fame talent and personality,” Fitzgerald said. “We’re going to miss him and what he brought to this game, his energy, his excitement, his love and passion will be sorely missed. I wish him the very best in retirement. I hope he comes to Arizona and hangs out with us a little bit.” Rosenhaus opening the door to Gronkowski’s possible return to the Patriots didn’t sound like wishful thinking on his part. It sounded reasonable. And it came across as a more credible scenario given what former Patriot Willie McGinest said on the NFL Network a couple of weeks before Gronkiowski announced his retirement Sunday night on Instagram. McGinest introduced the possibility that Gronk could “take a break for a while” from football and then return “deep into the season.” The Patriots have no choice, of course, but to proceed as if Gronkowski has played his final game in the NFL. They need to find a replacement, perhaps through a draft thought to be flush with NFL-caliber tight ends. The Patriots have six of the top 101 draft choices and it’s conceivable they could draft two tight ends high. Why not? The consensus top two tight ends in the draft, T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant, both played for Iowa. They are considered possible late first-round draft choices, and Alabama’s Irv Smith isn’t expected to last much longer than Hockenson and Fant. UCLA’s Caleb Wilson and Texas A&M’s Jace Sternberger also are highly regarded. Boston College’s Tommy Sweeney is projected to go as early as the fourth round by various scouting services. For some organizations, the possibility of Gronk coming out of retirement to save the season might hover as a distraction, but Pats coach Bill Belichick has a way of squashing such potential problems. He wouldn’t talk out it and wouldn’t let anyone else in the organization answer any questions about it. For now, Gronk is retired, but Rosenhaus said he could have a change of heart. Much crazier things have happened

He’s a huge personality whose mainstream appeal stems as much from his child-like enthusiasm as it does from his on-field dominance, and that’s just not something you see too often as part of the […]

So Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement this weekend, and pretty much the entire rest of the NFL let out a sigh of relief. Not just teams in the division, not just safeties or linebackers. Is Tom Brady the greatest quarterback in NFL history? Well, sure. There’s a list of names, but he’s certainly up there. But is Tom Brady the most irreplaceable player on the Patriots’ roster? That’s an entirely different question, and one that sends the concept of player value in a different direction. There’s no way New […]
