Beyond Lisbon

Today, April 25th, we have a holiday in Portugal. No, not another religious holiday: it’s the celebration of the April 25th 1974 revolution, also known as the “carnation revolution”, and which put an end to a 48 year long right-wing regime. As you can imagine you have plenty of online information about this day, but […]

CAN I have a T please, Bob? “What T is the name of the latest race-inspired Golf GTI?” The TCR is a run-out special of the Mk7.5 Golf GTI — there’s a new Mk8 Golf just around the corner — and, for me, it is a fitting send off Er, TCR. “It is TCR. It stands for Touring Car Racing. You’re right. Well done.” If you’re now sat there confused because you don’t know who Bob is, ask your parents. But for everyone else, how Blockbusters are those stickers down the side of this VW? Faster than any front-wheel drive GTI before it — it bangs out the 0-62mph sprint in 5.6 seconds Very. What’s more, the puddle lights also project three hexagons on to the floor. “Put yourself on that hot spot. It’s time for the Gold Run. Gold to gold in 60 seconds or less.” OK, enough Eighties quiz show references. I’ll move on. Thankfully, the naff honeycomb sticker pack is a £555 option on an otherwise brilliant car, so my advice is don’t soil it — spend the money on fuel instead. Unless you  like people  humming the Blockbusters theme tune wherever you go. The TCR is a run-out special of the Mk7.5 Golf GTI — there’s a new Mk8 Golf just around the corner — and, for me, it is a fitting send off. Faster than any front-wheel drive GTI before it — yep, two tenths of a second quicker than the stripped-out, track-ready Clubsport S — it bangs out the 0-62mph sprint in 5.6 seconds. It’s fast and precise, well balanced, has lots of low range response, holds its line through a corner (limited slip diff), and has a near-perfect driving position That’s down to the seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox with paddleshifts. No manual here. You can also have the top speed lifted from 155mph to 164mph. It is also the most aggressive-looking GTI with various splitters and spoilers and blobs of black detailing, although still some way short of the wild Honda Civic Type R. I lived with the TCR for a week and I can’t help but quote that old chestnut “everyday hot hatch”. It’s fast and precise, well balanced, has lots of low range response, holds its line through a corner (limited slip diff), and has a near-perfect driving position. Excellent brakes too. Trust me, it’s a LOT of fun down a B-road. Yet on dad duty, it is also refined and polite pottering around with the bin lids in the back. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable. How Blockbusters are those stickers down the side of this VW? The cabin looks and feels first class — as do all modern Golfs —  and is crowned by the digital driver’s binnacle and slick infotainment system. The TCR adds special red cloth upholstery and a competition-style red stripe at 12 o’clock on the steering wheel. To tell you which way the wheels are pointing. All the glossy car mags will tell you the 310hp Clubsport S was more  spectacular. That maybe so. But it didn’t have rear seats and was limited to just 150 UK cars. So less practical and as rare as rocking-horse poo. The TCR is two tenths of a second quicker from 0-62mph than the stripped-out, track-ready Clubsport S My only gripe with the TCR is that it’s overpriced, starting at £35,305. You can easily top £40k with options. Whereas the 300hp Golf R is cheaper, faster and has the added year-round insurance of four-wheel drive. Let’s finish with a G please, Bob. “What G has sold every 41 seconds since 1974?” Er, Golf. “Correct. Well done.” Every Golf is a blockbuster. [boxout headline=”KEY FACTS: VW GOLF GTI TCR”]Price: £35,305 Engine: 2-litre  turbo petrol Power: 290hp, 380Nm 0-62mph: 5.6 secs Top speed: 155mph Economy: 36mpg Emissions: 153g/km Rivals: Civic Type R, Megane RS 300 Trophy, Hyundai i30N [/boxout] Dacia for less than a daily coffee Get your morning rush in this Dacia Sandero LAST summer I told you the Dacia Duster was £4.60 a day on finance – “the price of a frothy coffee”.
