There can’t be too many joys in a performer’s life that would rank higher than being tapped, slapped and ultimately pummeled on the shoulder by an appreciative Mavis Staples. That happened a lot in a luminary-filled “Mavis & Friends” show Wednesday at L.A.’s Theatre at Ace Hotel, where he more impassioned guests quickly learned that […]

I believe or not, there is a Memorial Day weekend almost ahead, which means that the Boston Music Festival Calling 2019 will bring jams, humor, food and art to the Harvard Athletic Complex. Overall, the 2019 music festival – the 10th edition – has changed little since last year. There will be three stages of […]

In the last decade, nearly every major American city looked to create its own enduring music festival. While such big brands as Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo remain, the boom quickly went bust. Festivals conjure images of chaos — consider the 2017 Fyre debacle chronicled in two recent documentaries or the constant, conflicting news about the prospects of Woodstock 50 in August. Then there is Boston Calling. The first large, sustainable festival in our area, Boston Calling has proven impenetrable to the minor controversies and financial troubles that have sunk lesser events. “When we announced the festival for the first time in 2013, we had no social media presence, no idea if it would sell any tickets or get any traction,” festival co-founder Brian Appel said. “When that event sold out, we thought, ‘Oh, man, we have to deliver.’” On Friday, Boston Calling returns for its 10th event and third at the expansive Harvard Athletic Complex. Headliners include Twenty One Pilots,Travis Scott and Tame Impala. The move to Harvard’s grounds in Allston allowed the producers to double in size but still have a relatively small footprint. “The first thing you have to realize is you can’t be Coachella,” Appel said. “You’re not in the desert in California and you can’t replicate that vibe or mystique. If you set out to do that, you’re going to fail before you get off the ground. You have to have your identity from the beginning. Obviously we have taken great ideas from festivals around the world, but we just want to be ourselves.” Critics have questioned Boston Calling’s commitment to many things — the local scene, hip-hop, diversity. This year, Janelle Monae and Black Star both dropped off the bill (the Black Star camp says they were dropped after contract problems). Unfortunately, the festival lost a lot of its diversity and two amazing acts when this happened. “It’s disappointing to us, but when you have 50-plus artists, it’s inevitable a couple are going to have some unforeseen circumstance come up,” Appel said. “The booking process is not a linear equation. It’s not, ‘This is a slot for a female artist, this is a slot for hip-hop, this is a slot for alternative rock.’ The process doesn’t work that way when you are trying to coordinate 50 bands around their touring schedules and around your budget and scheduling for each day.” This weekend, Lil Nas X, Twenty One Pilots, Clairo, Tame Impala, Travis Scott, Logic, Brandi Carlile and Christine and the Queens are just some of the performers scheduled to appear. Appel says the goal is always to create a bill with wildly different artists who nicely blend together. He adds that local artists can be a big part of that but points out he would never call Boston Calling a linchpin in the local scene. “I will take no credit for fostering the local music scene,” he said. “However, we recognize there is a thriving music scene in this city, and selfishly we want those artists on our stage. We think it’s great for them and we think it’s great for our audience.” On the eve of his 10th weekend-long party, Appel doesn’t exactly know how to define success, but he knows just making it this far is a big part of it. He feels each year builds upon the last, with more acts and fans loving the experience. “We have seen a lot of artists who are excited to come and that feels good,” Appel said. “And there have been a lot of people who feel this is a really fun way to spend a weekend, and that feels like success to us.” For schedule, tickets and more, go to bostoncalling.com.

Where water meets land- connection.

There are a lot of things in my life that I just don’t remember. Some folks have memories like a steel trap, they can remember days, dates, locations, events…and for some reason, my memories are much more abstract. I can remember glimpses, moments, smells, and sounds. Recently, with all the excitement of finding my #bonusdad […]
