NATS chiefs today attacked the Home Secretary’s decision to ban Jihadi bride Shamima Begum from Britain. Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf suggested stripping the Isis teen of her UK citizenship could flout her human rights. Shamima Begum said that revoking her citizenship was ‘unjust’ and ‘heart-breaking’ Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said in a social media post that stripping the teen of here citizenship would flout human rights The SNP’s Commons home affairs spokeswoman Joanna Cherry said Sajid Javid’s decision was “more about his leadership ambitions than security issues or due process”. And MSP James Dornan said the decision was based on “utter populism and nothing to do with decency and humanity”. The SNP backlash came as 19-year-old Begum said the Home Secretary’s call was “unjust” and “heart-breaking” – and she may try for Dutch citizenship via her IS husband. [bc_video video_id=”6003593500001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Piers Morgan says ISIS bride Shamima Begum should ‘go f*** herself’ and ‘rot in hell’ instead of returning to UK”] Mr Yousaf’s comments came amid speculation the teen, who gave birth to a boy at the weekend, could be sent to her mother’s homeland of Bangladesh. The Holyrood minister said in a social media post: “Human rights are easy for those we like. “Our commitment to them is tested when we consider the rights of those who have committed (or accused of) terrible atrocities. Shamima left the UK when she was 15 to join the Islamic death cult “At best Shamima’s baby has been condemned to a country riddled with poverty, at worst made a refugee.” Responding to a Twitter post which say Mr Javid “bypassed” the UK justice system by banning Begum, Mr Yousaf said: “And worth pointing out how this power the Home Secretary can exercise clearly affects the children and grandchildren of immigrants disproportionately due to them unwittingly having citizenship of a country they may never have set foot in before.” Shamima Begum’s baby could be allowed into UK despite ISIS bride mum being barred His remarks were challenged by a Twitter user, who asked about the “human rights” of UK citizens, and if there was a risk “unrepentant” Begum would “preach hate” to her children and others. The Justice Secretary replied: “And she is out in the world – free. Should she not, like anyone accused of a crime, be judged by her peers in a court of law and if found guilty of terrorist offences, imprisoned? Would you not feel safer knowing a convicted terrorist was behind bars?” The Home Secretary was accused of putting ‘leadership ambitions’ before ‘security issues or due process’ Senior Nat Ms Cherry – who’s also a QC – said the Home Secretary’s decision “may be in breach of international law” and “lacked mercy to an innocent child”. The Edinburgh South West MP said: “Unless this young woman holds dual citizenship the Home Secretary’s action may be in breach of international law. “There is also the welfare of an innocent child to be considered. [article-rail-topic title=”Latest Shamima Begum updates” term_id=”9623″ posts_number=”6″ /] “One is left with the very strong suspicion that the Home Secretary is more concerned with playing to the gallery and furthering his leadership ambitions than with due process.” Glasgow Cathcart MSP Mr Dornan also waded in, saying: “So the Home Office have taken that stupid young girl’s citizenship away from her. How does that work? “Fifteen when she left, given birth three times and lost two, and she’s only 19 now. The Justice Secretary waged in on the debate on Twitter The 19-year-old may try for Dutch citizenship via her IS husband “Everything done by this UK Government is about utter populism and nothing to do with decency and humanity. “Public execution is always much more appealing to a certain group of people. “Can you imagine! I hate to think what state her head must be in. “Let’s be clear though, she must face the consequences for whatever crimes she may have committed. “And of course I have unlimited sympathy for those affected by the horrors of IS, a disgusting vile terror gang.” Begum sparked uproar by claiming the murder of 22 music fans in 2017’s Manchester Arena suicide bombing – including 14-year-old Eilidh MacLeod, from Barra – was “fair justification” for UK airstrikes on IS in Syria. Nats Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil, who supported the MacLeod family, has not commented on the Home Secretary’s decision. But he appeared to signal his discomfort with the UK Government approach by re-tweeting a comment by Plaid Cymru politician Liz Saville Roberts. Begum fled the UK with two other girls from the same east London school in February 2015 In the post, the Welsh MP said: “If the rights of this British citizen are at the disposal of populist politicians, only one question remains: ‘Who next?’” Reacting to the SNP attacks, the Scottish Conservatives singled out Mr Dornan’s comments and branded them “inflammatory and deeply unhelpful”. A spokesman added: “Isis has claimed responsibility for terror attacks across the UK and in Europe, that have killed innocent men, women and children. “People are entitled to disagree with this decision but opponents should at least accept that these are difficult calls that are taken with the security of our country at heart.” There is also speculation that the teen could be sent to her mother’s homeland of Bangladesh Begum fled the UK in February 2015 with two other girls from the same school in east London. Last week, she declared she wanted to come home with her son. And the case took a dramatic twist on Tuesday when it emerged Mr Javid had decided to strip Ms Begum of her British citizenship. The British Nationality Act 1981 allows the Home Secretary to take such action if it is “conducive to the public good”. Joanna Cherry slammed the Home Secretary and said he may be in breach of international law But a protracted legal battle now looms over the move, and international law bans nations from making people stateless. Today Begum, who left the UK to travel to Syria aged 15, said she was “a bit shocked” when she learned of the Mr Javid’s decision. Speaking at a refugee camp in Syria, where she is staying with her newborn baby boy, she suggested she may now seek citizenship in the Netherlands, where her husband is from. Shown a copy of a Home Office letter setting out the action against her by an ITV crew, she said: “I don’t know what to say. I am not that shocked but I am a bit shocked. ISIS bride Shamima Begum moans it’s ‘unjust’ after she’s stripped of British citizenship “It’s a bit upsetting and frustrating. I feel like it’s a bit unjust on me and my son. “It’s kind of heartbreaking to read. My family made it sound like it would be a lot easier for me to come back to the UK when I was speaking to them in Baghuz. It’s kind of hard to swallow.” She suggested other IS returnees are “being sent back to Britain”, adding: “I don’t know why my case is any different to other people, or is it just because I was on the news four years ago? [article-rail-section title=”Most read in politics” posts_category=”13″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] “Another option I might try with my family is my husband is from Holland and he has family in Holland. “Maybe I can ask for citizenship in Holland. If he gets sent back to prison in Holland I can just wait for him while he is in prison.” [bc_video video_id=”6004486541001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”ISIS bride Shamima Begum moans it’s ‘unjust’ after being stripped of British citizenship”] We pay for your stories and videos!
