The Ukiah Daily Journal
By J. Holden I promised Michael Laybourn before he died that I’d be among the first to celebrate the resurrection of the Mendocino Brewing Company, if that were to ever happen, against all odds, yet which is what I’m here to do. And to honor him. Michael and Norman Franks and John Scahill and I got this homegrown bootstrap Brewpub off the ground back in 1983. MBC and its Hopland Brewery turned out to be an historic and legendary enterprise, spawning over 6,000 brewpubs around the country in the following decades, which you may have noticed. Before all that Michael and Norman and John were devoted home brewers: occasional construction workers a half-step ahead of (or behind) their electric bills while dreaming non-stop about Willie Nelson and old Cadillacs and making real beer around here. Like that. Then the law changed to allow a microbrewery to sell its beer on-premises, and Michael’s imagination caught fire. He was an Aries. You can get a flavor of the history of the Great Time that followed, as well as the apparent demise of the enterprise, by conjuring up my MBC obituary published in the 3/24/18 Ukiah Daily Journal. As I was saying, before MBC and the Hopland Brewery were ever conceived, Michael and Norman had earned themselves a local reputation as the garage-brewers of “Thunder Beer” (I’ll pay $500 cash to anyone who still has a labelled bottle of that, empty or full).  And when the law changed, Michael got us to throw in together, what little there was to throw, and created “California’s First Brewpub Since Prohibition” (second in the nation). Michael and me didn’t always agree on how MBC was to be managed, but he was the President, and it was definitely taking off like a rocket. Can’t argue with that. We were putting Mendocino County on the map and making a lot of people happy and having a good time ourselves, and even paying our electric bills, all at the same time. Yes, yes. To the surprise of many folks, me included, that outlaw redneck-hippie Michael, who was also an injured Army veteran, joined the Ukiah Rotary Club after we started the business, and was a devout member and outspoken political curmudgeon to his dying breath. Well, as happens in economies, times turned south and Michael and Company had to sell the business, which proceeded to go bankrupt a few years later. That’s when I wrote MBC’s obituary, while still solemnly promising Michael I’d be shouting out the good news if and when the Mendocino Brewing Company and its Red Tail Ale and Eye of the Hawk ever got miraculously resurrected. Which it has. Enter into the tomb Gary Breen, who has almost single-handedly resurrected the Mendocino Brewing Company and its famous raptors this last year. Today, rising from the ashes, the Brewery at the south end of Ukiah is ramping up production once again, and you can get your hands on those legendary brews at various bars around our blessed Mendocino County, and beyond.  Better yet, stop by the old Hopland Brewpub that’s been resurrected by former manager Ron Lindenbusch as the Hopland Tap House, and check out his growing collection of MBC memorabilia, including original hand-bottled magnums and anniversary mugs.  He even has the restaurant going again, and the beer garden, and live music. And of course, Red Tail and Hawkeye on tap. Michael Laybourn is gone now, to that Great Brewpub in the sky, or maybe the other place, who knows? But wherever he’s at, he’s a’smiling about the resurrection of his beloved Mendocino Brewing Company and its liquid raptors – may they soar forever. Bottoms-up!

From October through March, this spot provides the first glimpse of the sunrise in the United States. The rest of the year, there are other places in Maine that see the sunrise […]

The approval of a controversial $80-million community centre occurred so quickly at council Wednesday, I’m told even members of the Don Mills Residents Association (DMRI) sitting in the council gallery missed it. It came right after a review of what was the items left to cover at council by speaker Frances Nunziata just after 10 […]
