HANOVER – Scituate came in with a win over Hanover already this season and the idea to crush the hearts of the Indians’ faithful on Valentine’s Day and senior night. But James Clarkson showed up for the date just in time with 10 of his 18 points in a fourth quarter barrage as Hanover (17-3; 13-2) pulled away for a 71-61 win to capture the Patriot League Fisher Division title. Holding on to a slim one-point lead – 52-51 at the end of the third quarter, Hanover went on a 14-0 run to open the final stanza as Clarkson fought tooth and nail in the paint for every point to get the Indians the 66-53 lead with 3:05 left to play in regulation. “(Clarkson) has improved so much from his freshman year until now, he’s such a great leader, and nothing really fazes him and he wants to be in those big moments,” said Hanover head coach Nick Hannigan. Hannigan didn’t even realize his senior captain sparked such a big run to open the fourth and close out the game. “You don’t notice those things when you are coaching as we are just trying to go one possession at a time”, added Hannigan. “But what we did a really good job this time that we didn’t do last time was handle their (defensive) pressure”. Scituate (14-3) came out of the gates in their familiar full court zone press but Hanover was up for the challenge. The Indians picked apart the zone with precision as Patrick Damon snapped a three as time expired to give the Indians a 19-16 lead after the first. But Scituate was their own worst enemy, as the Sailors shot 2-of-12 from three-point range in the first half and trailed by 12 at the break, 35-27. “They are big and they can rebound. They are not 6’10’’ but they are 6’3’’ and long and they beat us that way. They got multiple shots, multiple possessions, and that’s how you lose,” said Scituate head coach, Matt Poirier. Coach Poirier was looking to get his team back on track in the second half and he didn’t need to look too far as his son is one of the more prolific scorers in Division 2 this season. Jack Poirier turned it up a notch and snapped three three-pointers in the third quarter alone en route to his game-high 22 points to get the Sailors back within one, 52-51. Along the way, Poirier eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau with 5.6 seconds left in the third and received a standing ovation as Hanover went out of their way to stop the game for the standout junior guard to honor his accomplishment. “(At the end of the third), I thought that’s where we needed to be and it was just we didn’t take care of the ball and we didn’t execute,” said coach Poirier. “It was great that they honored (Jack) and they were gracious to honor him.” Damon finished with a team high 20 points for Hanover while senior Steve Simon (nine points) finished off the win with a three-pointer with 1:41 left to give Hanover the 71-56 lead as both teams emptied their benches in the final seconds. Aidan Sullivan popped in 18 for Scituate.   “It wasn’t our best showing last time (against Scituate),” said Hannigan. “It was senior night and seniors step up and that’s what they did. Hopefully we get one maybe two more home games out of this.”
