A brief foreword: this is a personal reflective essay about the second day of Black Studies lectures taking place in Edinburgh. You can read the first here. Since there is no formal coursework, I decided to direct the thought and energy leftover into writing about each session.   There are few things in this world […]

Chico Enterprise-Record
On the track and the diamond, Chico State athletes were well-represented in the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Athlete of the Week awards. Wildcats track and field athletes Nicole Anthony and Jack Johnson, baseball pitcher Kenton Carruthers and softball catcher Claire Wayne all earned honors from the conference for the week of March 11-17. For both Anthony and Johnson, their first-place performances in the women’s and men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase last Saturday at the Hornet Invitational highlighted a banner day for the Wildcats. Anthony’s time of 10 minutes, 51.09 seconds, more than 13 seconds faster than her previous personal record, was the fastest in NCAA Division II so far this season and established an NCAA provisional mark. Despite only competing in the event once since the 2017 CCAA Championships, her latest effort is the seventh best in program history. Similarly, Johnson ran his first steeplechase of the 2019 season at the Hornet Invitational, and showed no signs of rust in the field of 26 competitors. He clocked the second fastest time in NCAA Division II this season with a time of 9:02.04, which was also a little over two seconds off his PR. The time was also an NCAA provisional mark. Both the Chico State men’s and women’s track and field teams will return to Sacramento this week for the Sacramento City College Jamie Nieto Invitational on Thursday and Friday. The sophomore Carruthers picked up his first two wins in a Chico State uniform March 11 at Cal State East Bay, as the Wildcats earned three wins on the day to sweep the series. He then recorded his first save last Saturday at Cal State Bernardino, coming on during the seventh inning with Chico State holding a 3-1 lead, in a series the Wildcats also swept. In 10 appearances this season, Carruthers has pitched 18.2 innings with 15 strikeouts, eight walks, seven earned runs and 18 hits allowed. The award for Carruthers comes one week after fellow Chico State pitcher Grant Larson earned the same CCAA distinction. Chico State, winners of nine in a row, will play host to Cal State L.A. Friday at 1 p.m. to kick off the four-game series. Wayne, a senior catcher for the No. 4-ranked Wildcats softball team, was the top hitter on the team during last weekend’s series at Cal State Dominguez Hills in which Chico State won three of four. The team batted .371 collectively, and Wayne went 8-for-12 (.667) while reaching base 11 times, with four doubles and four RBIs. She was behind home plate for the entirety of the series, and threw out one Dominguez Hills baserunner in the process. The Wildcats (18-5, 16-4 CCAA) sit atop the conference standings by a half game, and will face second-place UC San Diego (18-6, 16-5) in a home series beginning Sunday at 1 p.m. Chico Nuts set to host golf tournament at Bidwell Park The Chico Nuts baseball organization will host a 4-person scramble golf tournament at Bidwell Park Golf Course on April 6. The tournament helps finance the season for the Nuts, the Chico Suns 17U and 16U, and Chico Rice 14U and 13U seasons. The entry fee is $100 per person and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, a barbecue lunch, drinks, entry into four hole-in-one contests and tee prizes. Interested participants can sign up at Contact Tom Stevens at or George Laver at for more information. The Stacey West

I’ll only normally do one of these per team, so it’s been missing recently as we’ve played sides I’d already covered.  However, I did cover the Latics ahead of our 1-1 draw there earlier in the season, but they still get the thank you treatment this afternoon. It’s a huge game tomorrow night, a great […]
