It’s the beginning of the end – so let’s remember all those laughs along the way, eh Mr J? (Picture: Fox)
Gotham has finally reached the end of the road – and The Beginning will mark the introduction of Batman, and the full circle moment we’ve been waiting for.
But with every end comes a little reflection, and that makes us appreciate just how brilliant the show was at bringing comic book moments to life, as well as creating some iconic scenes of their own.
Here are our 10 favourite (or most important) moments of the series as we prepare to say goodbye forever.
The genesis of the Joker was no laughing matter (Picture: Fox)
Jerome Valeska reveals his true colours – The Blind Fortune Teller S1
Introduced as the suddenly orphaned son to a murdered circus performer, Jerome Valeska’s story starts out as a heartbreaker – with people struggling to figure out exactly who did it.
But, after hours of being interviewed and helping authorities breaks him, the revelation of who Jerome’s father is breaks him, leaving everyone watching it shivering.
Appearing to break down in tears, Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) suddenly switches, transforming his sobs into hysterical laughter as he explains how and why he killed his own mother.
Folks, we’ve found ourselves a baby Joker in our midst.
The death of the Wayne’s started the creation of Batman (Picture: Fox)
The Murder of the Waynes – Pilot S1
The one scene to start it all off – the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents in a back alley is the defining moment of his past that sets him on the path of Batman.
Moaning after leaving a film early, Martha and Thomas Wayne were robbed at gunpoint before being shot anyway, leaving their 11-year-old son screaming in fear between their bodies.
It’s been seen before, but Gotham doesn’t half kick you in the gut with it.
Bruce and Alfred’s unbreakable bond suffered a major shake in season 4 (Picture: Fox)
Bruce and Alfred’s fight – Queen Takes Knight S4
There is no stronger bond throughout Gotham, comic books or TV show, than the one Bruce Wayne has with Alfred.
So watching them actually lamp punches at each other is pretty tough to stomach.
As Bruce’s desire to try and fight back the bad guys got worse, so did Alfred’s struggle to try and keep the young man under his care safe.
Training him only gets him so far, and in one heated moment the pair end up actually trading blows – ending with Bruce face down on the floor after Alfred lamps him one in the face.
Jeremiah warns Bruce would be ‘a joke without a punchline’ without him (Picture: Fox)
ACE Chemicals Showdown – ACE Chemicals S5
Now if we’re being really honest here, nearly every scene involving Bruce and Jeremiah/Jerome facing off against each other would be on this list.
That moment Bruce literally punched the face off his nemesis in a hall of mirrors? That was an absolute classic. But sorry, you will need to go to the back of the line.
ACE Chemicals, for those who watched the 1989 film, and the comic book fans, was the pinnacle creation moment of the Joker. As a result, it was something we had all been waiting for.
Standing over a vat of bright green acid on a suspicious unreliable-looking walkway, the pair begin to scrap, with Jeremiah continuing to plead his case that they both need each other in a twisted bid to survive.
‘You need me. I’m the answer to your life’s questions. Without me, you’re just a joke without a punchline,’ he tells Bruce, as the railing behind him begins to give way. With one swift move, Bruce gets the upper hand, and Jeremiah falls into the depths below.
He survives – but is changed forever.
Oswald Cobblepot’s mother is killed by Galavan – Mommy’s Little Monster S2
Before Oswald became a power hungry, recognition finding problem on the hands of the citizens of Gotham, it’s worth remembering – he was once just a mama’s boy.
Ok, so Oswald (Robin Lord Taylor) was always just a little power hungry, doing whatever it takes under the guidance of Fish Mooney in order to get a foot, or even his little toe, on the ladder he considered success.
So when Galavan kidnaps his blindly devoted and loving mother, before having Tabitha stab her while Oswald held her in his arms, was a brassy move – and now he had nothing to be nice for.
Granted he always maintained some humanity – but this heartbreaking moment lost him most of it, and spurred him on for vengeance in the seasons to come.
Edward Imagines Oswald singing Amy Winehouse – How The Riddler Got His Name S3
This is just an image of Gotham at its most brilliantly bonkers.
Recreating Edward Nygma as a multiple personality suffering, unhinged chemist brought around both genius and had its setbacks – but definitely left room to play with reality.
In this moment, fresh from shooting Oswald dead (or so he thinks) Nygma unhinges completely and imagines his former partner-in-crime/bestie performing his own routine to Wake up Alone by Amy Winehouse.
He then goes back and forth between that and a soaked through Penguin, pecking at his guilty conscience.
Detective Gordon gets infected with the Tetch virus – Destiny Calling S3
The Tetch Virus was a bit controversial as a plot point, but it comes pretty close to putting the never moving Detective Gordon out of work for good.
Formed in the blood of Alice Tetch after Hugo Stranger’s experiments, if infected with it, would cause you to hallucinate and act more on your instincts.
If weaponized, it could have turned the whole city mad as you succumb to the virus and voices in your head – so having Detective Gordon try and hold it together is a struggle as you see the effects take their toll.
All while Fish Mooney and Strange sit there laughing.
The Arkham Asylum Escape – One Of My Three Soups S4
Of all the places Gotham has to offer, Arkham Asylum is probably a favourite – especially as it has so much room to cause so much trouble.
So we’re going to give this to Asylum Escape plan – mainly because it chucks in so many amazing characters and background characters into one place, and shows just what those involved were capbable of.
It should also be noted that this entire episode in general was Ben McKenzie (aka Jim Gordon) making his direction debut.
The release in itself is articulated flawlessly by J, Jervis Tetch (The Mad Hatter) and Scarecrow, and eventually helps bring around turning Gotham into a lawless town in No Man’s Land.
Proves you don’t have to be mad to work there but it helps.
Professor Pyg’s Big Finish – Let Them Eat Pie S4
Lazlo Valentin was one creepy as hell dude – dressing him and sometimes his victims in pig’s flesh as he enacted his serial killer fantasies.
Targeting bent coppers and crooks, he would torment the GCPD sending them human meat pies and pig heads before picking them off one by one.
In a final showdown, after donning various disguises, Gordon finally overpowers him and takes him to Arkham.
Pyg does eventually escape, disappear, come back and start tormenting Gordon again, but the big banquet sequence turns the stomach to think about.
The whole thing from beginning to end is super, super creepy but you couldn’t take your eyes off it.
Eduardo and Gordon confront The Riddler – Pena Dura S5
The bomb that goes off in Haven proved once and for all noone was safe even under the aid of the ever faithful Jim Gordon in his middle ground between the gang warfare taking place throughout the now helpless city.
Discovering it was Edward behind the bomb, Gordon goes to confront his enemy to get it confirmed. Just when they were getting to know each other too!
However, they can’t arrest him, as the cat and mouse moment turns on its head when Edward reveals he had rigged a bunch of bombs, designed to detonate depending on his heart rate.
So now not only do they have to remain calm, they can’t kill him either.
This scene is a real head-to-head between the brute force of Eduardo, the ability to reason by Gordon, and Edward’s smarts.
