Have you had your helping of hot Paul Goldschmidt content yet this fine Saturday? If not, you’re in luck- it’s time for another look into team-building given the Cardinals’ newest acquisition. Today, however, I don’t want to talk about 2019. Andrew St. John covered ways the team can maximize 2019 yesterday. Instead, I want to […]

Back when the United States was busy celebrating its 200th birthday, David Grisman introduced a new, quintessentially American sound on the eponymous 1976 album “David Grisman Quintet.” The mandolin master had already cut a wide swath through the nation’s music, from his early passion for bluegrass through his collaboration with the Grateful Dead. Dubbed dawg music for its stylistically promiscuous parentage, the product of Grisman’s blazing young quintet opened up vast new sonic territories with its jazz-steeped acoustic string band sound. As one of his signature ensembles, the group served for decades as an essential proving ground for musicians eager to integrate far-flung traditions from Brazil, Cuba, Appalachia and Paris. A key moment in the evolution of dawg music took place in 1978 when Grisman was hired to write the score for the film “King of the Gypsies.” After spending weeks scouting for a violinist in Hungarian restaurants,Grisman had “a little light bulb go off that Stephan Grappelli is the ultimate Gypsy fiddle player,” he recalled. The French violinist, who created the Hot Club style with guitarist Django Reinhardt, ended up touring with the band and recording the classic 1981 album “ Stephane Grappelli/David Grisman Live”  (Warner Bros.). For his annual engagement at Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage, Grisman performs with his sextet featuring bassist Jim Kerwin, flutist Matt Eakle, percussionsit George Marsh, all longtime dawgs. Rounding out the combo are recent additions Chad Manning on fiddle and guitarist George Cole, a player with a deep affinity for Gypsy jazz. The David Grisman Sextet released a self-named album in 2016, Grisman’s first album focusing on original composition in a decade. Clearly the old dawg is still learning new tricks. Ethics in Science

This course presented many historical examples of techno-scientists practicing unethical behaviour. In many cases, the scientists were respected members of the scientific community. I was always surprised by their behaviour and how they were unable to see how what they were doing was wrong. This made me think about what may be happening now that […]
