The world lost a great lady last week when the poet Mary Oliver died. To say that she was wonderful and full of wonders is an understatement. She was my favorite contemporary poet. This is one of her best-known pieces from her Pulitzer-Prize winning book, New and Selected Poems.

Now I’m way beyond confusion. Now I’m scared. I’ve slid down the rabbit-hole and what’s down there is dark and serious. This is not play-acting or some waking bad dream she’s having. She’s changed, somehow overnight. I don’t know how I know this but I sense it as surely as I sense my own skin. […]

This painting depicts Laozi riding on an ox and was created during the 17th century. A major theme of Taoist philosophy was naturalness and spontaneity (自然, ziran) and so Laozi is accompanied not only by an ox, but also by the mountain, river, rocks, and plants. Neither Laozi nor the ox are given a dominant […]

It is 1879. The British Empire, while larger than any of its contemporaries, and the largest it had ever been to date, was still expanding. Queen Victoria ruled colonies on every continent.  The British Raj had been instituted barely 20 years prior, and the Scramble for Africa had not yet begun. Britain’s holdings in South […]

Snip snip snip… A mid-aged lady is under a table lamp sewing a golden floral t-shirt, attempting to make every stitch clean and neat. The American Repertory Theater devoted much of 2018 to looking at racial injustice, xenophobia and the psychological toll of being an outsider (see smart, passionate productions of “Barber Shop Chronicles,” “The Black Clown” and “Jagged Little Pill”). The Cambridge theater company continues that work by starting the new year with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s production “Othello,” now through Feb. 9 at the Loeb Drama Center. The Oregon company connects the dots between Elizabethan values and the contemporary battle for racial and religious tolerance. But director Bill Rauch — currently artistic director at Oregon and soon-to-be artistic director of the new Ronald O. Perelman Center for Performing Arts at New York’s World Trade Center — also concentrates “Othello’s” examination of how vanity, lust and virulent masculinity consistently add up to tragedy. Rauch sets his version in the modern day with the title character (played by Chris Butler) an admiral in the U.S. Navy who has just married Desdemona (Alejandra Escalante), the white, Christian daughter of a senator. (The dialogue remains faithful to Shakespeare’s original text.) Othello’s status as a Muslim and a black man puts him at odds with the dominant culture. Iago (Danforth Comins), furious he is passed over for a promotion, exploits the once-generous and joyful admiral’s insecurities to turn him mad and murderous. So much of “Othello” hinges on the leads’ pitch perfect portrayals of their characters — one proud and naive, the other charismatic and calculating. Comins has the ability to switch instantly between doting servant in public and vengeful bane of his commander in his monologues. When he raves over and over, “I hate the Moor,” he imbues the word “Moor” with so much hate, as if it were the darkest, most-unspeakable racial epithet. But the troupe’s performance also illustrates how the pair’s egos and megalomania blinds them to the suffering of their wives. As Iago’s wife, Emilia (Amy Kim Waschke), tells Othello’s bride, “(Men) are all but stomachs, and we all but food:/They eat us hungerly, and when they are full/They belch us.” In age of #MeToo, the brutality toward women in the play cries out as much as the racial and religious bigotry. When Othello repeatedly bellows that his wife is a “whore,” he spits out the slur with the same rage Iago uses when he sneers the word “moor.” Emilia says, “Let husbands know/Their wives have sense like them: they see, and smell/And have their palates both for sweet and sour/As husbands have.” But Othello, Iago and the wider world stay willfully ignorant of this obvious reality. As with all of Shakespeare’s tragedies, the author sprinkles humor throughout the work — as he pines for Desdemona, Roderigo (Stephen Michael Spencer) looks and acts like a young, dumb Keanu Reeves on his way to a party in Ibiza. But  “Othello” remains an intense three-hour look at the destructive force of unchecked ego and unwarranted distrust — a too-relevant theme in 2019. “Othello,” at the Loeb Drama Center, now through Feb. 9. Tickets from $25; americanrepertorytheater.org.
