PIEDMONT — Coaching his final game to close out a solid six-year run with the Middletown Mustangs, Anthony Bazzano could only thank his five seniors for making the 2018-19 season such an enjoyable one despite a 66-23 loss to the Piedmont Highlanders on Wednesday night in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division IV girls basketball playoffs at Piedmont. Middletown opened the season 1-5 but won 17 of its final 21 to finish 18-9 overall. “I’m proud of my five seniors and the job they did this year,” Bazzano said of daughter Ellie Bazzano, Alyssa Hart, Kassi Agapoff, Hanna Morris and Breanne Jones. “Not only for their level of play, but for their leadership and the way they carried themselves. I’m very happy with the way the season went.” Piedmont (18-9), the No. 5 seed in the 16-team Division IV field, should have been a top-three seed, according to Bazzano. “We were prepared for their size and their athletic ability but not for the way they shot the ball,” Bazzano said. “We ran into a buzzsaw.” Bazzano said the Highlanders, who advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday against No. 4 Swett High School of Crockett, are a “next-level team.” Added Bazzano, “They’re just a heck of a team. They’re disciplined offensively and their ball movement is crisp. I just didn’t expect them to be the shooters they were tonight.” Piedmont led 21-4 after one quarter and 36-11 at halftime. “My girls played really hard tonight,” Bazzano said. Emily Santiago’s seven points paced the Mustangs, who finished second behind Cloverdale in the North Central League I race this season. Agapoff added five points and Jones had four.
